I'm curious if anyone has welded the rear spiders on a FJ80 with no negative results?

I've ran plenty of welded diffs on part-time 4x4 applications and I know about the handling and tire wear part that comes along with a welded diff. I guess my question is how does the 80 react to a welded rear being an AWD system? This is my trail vehicle, however it does occasionally see some pavement.

Cool. This isn't an entirely a budget build but just trying to save where I can. I can get a lunchbox for <$300 but if there's no negative effects to the AWD system then that's $300 for other goodies :D

Leave the welded diffs to the drifters. I say do it right and get an auto or selectable locker.

Nope, not yet.

It will be in the next few weeks if there are no adverse effects to the AWD system.

A selectable locker option is a great idea for a DD or a vehicle that often sees icy conditions. I just don't see the value in a selectable rear locker for my particular application. It will be mechanical or welded.

An option is to just weld a couple of teeth on the side gears. This is done out of the diff, so less chance of dingle balls, welding debris, messing up the works. Also is easily reversible, if you decide it's not for you.

Like this, pictured is for a 4 pinion diff, 2 pinion diff would only need to be welded in 2 places.

This is the kind of info I'm looking for! I'll probably end up putting a small piece of plate between the carrier and the pinion and seal weld it also. Just to ensure I get a "full" lock.

Make it as strong as possible, giving it the best chance to withstand the massive 3FE power! :hillbilly:

You may want to consider the kind of trails you're planing on running. I can't imagine negotiating the trails around here (we have trees) with a locked rear. I frequently have to fold in my mirrors and rub my front bumper on trees to make it though the turns which is just not possible with the rear locked.
