The problem with welding with thermite is you need a mold to hold the molten metal in the desired shape as it cools. Getting just the right amount of thermite to properly welt a part is near impossible so when used they use a bit extra and use a mold to keep the molten metal mass in the shape they want it in. Works great for welding rails, but for something delicate like a truck frame it is near impossible to use.
 
At one time, I carried short jumpers for multiple battery welding. Then I switched over to carrying a seperate alternator set up for full output that could be installed in place of the normal alt for welding. I carry a Mobi-Arc now, set up to be connected when needed. All of these methods burn a rod pretty well.

Oddly enough, I've never had to use one on the trail. Friends have broken things on the trail, where the ability to weld would have been invaluable, but I was not present on those trips. :lol:
It's still nice to have the ability, just in case.
