Apologies if this has already been addressed but I couldn't find it with a search. Something weird happened to me the other day on the drive home from town. I use my cruise control pretty consistently and while running about 58mph on a 2 lane road with gentle hills it downshifted but did not kick out of cruise control. I waited for it to upshift again when it topped the hill but it stayed in the same gear. It was running abut 3200 rpm at that speed, which was more confusing since it normally only needs to kick down to about 2200 (or I guess out of OD). I killed the cruise and it stayed where it was. I tried the S Mode and as soon as I moved the shifter over it showed I was in 4th gear. I tried manually upshifting it to 5th and 6th, but the engine rpm did not change. I nursed it home, the engine never stuttered (although I had initially thought it was the engine cutting out on me) and it seemed fine other than this issue when I got to the house. Has anyone else run into this? 2008 LX570 with around 220,000 miles. I've recently had the neutral position switch replaced at a Toyota dealer but I don't think this should be related. I have asked about this on a Facebook 200 group and received the answer below:

"This same behavior happened to my 08 but it happened when my 4LO light stayed flashing and VSC warning came on too, which lead me to check the transfer case actuators. My transmission was “tricked” into thinking it should be operating in 4LO mode and would only shift as high as 4th gear, even in S mode, same exact symptoms as you describe. Anyway, turns out that the grounding cable for the actuator assembly was completely eroded away and not connected. I ordered a new one and replaced it, now everything is as good as new. Might be worth a look if nothing else comes up."

I'm almost 66 years old, have arthritis pretty much from the lower back down, and while I am physically able to crawl under and check it, it will leave me pretty beat up for the next several days. None of the warning lights on the dash has activated, so I'm not sure if what he is describing is the problem I have. I've already spent $4,000 this year having assorted repairs done on this thing and would just like to see if anyone else has run into this particular issue before I run it into my local dealer (bend over artist). Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

My gut says the transmission heated up and the ECU locked out higher gears until it cooled off. Lower gears (especially 4th) move fluid faster through the system and cool better. This is more likely to happen on mountain passes than light hills but it would be my guess.

If the problem is gone I would not worry about it. If you start it back up and it’s still limiting to 4th gear then you could have a shop check the grounding strap but my next instinct would be to get a code reader like OBD Fusion which can read Toyota-specific errors and see if there’s anything stored

Possible, but I had only driven it about 15 minutes into town, did about 20 minutes of shopping, then was driving the 15 minutes back to the house when this occurred. It's done a couple cross country trips in the past year, but other than that I really only run it a couple times a month just to give it some exercise. But I may take it back to town tomorrow to see what happens. I just really hate these kinds of weird issues because they give me pause on using it for the long trips, which is its primary purpose. I've already pretty much decided it's going to the Toyota dealer, I was just hoping someone in here had run into this and had a quick answer. The lack of any warning lights in conjunction with it is an eye opener too. Thank you for the reply.

I do wonder about the recent neutral position switch work. It’s not obvious to me what the connection could be, but whenever anyone has a problem with a component where recent work was done, I suggest having the dealer make sure everything was hooked back up.

I'm already planning to ask about that too. The headphone Aux jack stopped working after they replaced the under dash evaporator. I took it back and the mechanic found where that plug had come loose and put it back together, but it didn't last an hour after I left. So I imagine that plug is probably beyond a simple fix. I'm going to drive it to town again tomorrow and see what happens.

Sooooo, I did basically the same drive back to town today. The CDL light was still flashing from my in yard test from yesterday, but the transmission responded normally. No cruise control or AHC function (it read "off" in the display, probably because of the CDL light). I got to town, went inside and got food, then drove back home. Upon startup the CDL light was off, the cruise control worked on the drive home, and there were no other issues. I hate these kinds of gremlins because they can be so difficult to troubleshoot. No light probably means no code to read now but I'll still be out $250 for the diagnostic. It's times like these I regret not just keeping the '72 Blazer I drove for 15 years, and just should have tried to restore. Thanks for the replies. I'll probably still try to get them to look at the wiring harness for the 4WD actuator.

The CDL light might just be the standard “CDL flashing in cold start” that many of us often see. That goes away after the drivetrain warms up and you restart. It might not come back for months.

My gut still says somewhere the ECU determined your transmission was too hot and locked you out of gears above 4th. Could be a bad sensor reading, could be a faulty ground, could be a stuck transmission thermostat, could be something else I’m not thinking of. If you never got any warning lights and it’s working ok now I’d want to put a code reader on it but I’m inclined to think it’s an anomaly.

I would recommend OBD Fusion and a ELM327-compatible OBD2 Bluetooth adapter. That can read any stored codes, including all the Toyota-specific ones and will set you back less than $50 total
