Every now and then when backing out of my driveway in reverse I hear a thunk when shifting from reverse to drive.

When it happens, I’m always in reverse going up a hill (my driveway is fairly steep) with the wheels turned hard left (front of wheel facing away from the body).

I’ve inspected it but don’t see anything obvious. Need to dig in a little deeper. Any ideas of where I should look first? It started happening when I swapped to 34’s on new wheels.

When you shift from reverse to drive are you still slightly rolling backwards? If so, this is likely something to do with the traction control….I think it’s the sound of the abs pump…someone with better technical knowledge can chime in, but if this is the case it is perfectly normal. I’ve owned a 4Runner, GX460, LX570, and a Land Cruiser and they all do it. Eventually I got into the habit of coming to a complete stop before shifting into drive because it drives me crazy

No, I’m always careful to come to a full stop when going from reverse to drive

Is it repeatable right when it happens? Try stopping when you head it then reversing again and not if it happens. The forward and listen again. If you hear it every time u change direction, it could be the spiders ( u-joints).
