Since installing the 4.88 gears, I've had problems with the front pinion seal weeping (leaking slowly). Initially both front and rear were weeping, but after reinstalling new seals the rear one is now good, but the front continues to leak.

I believe the front seal was initially replaced with a non-oem seal, then with a different non-oem seal, then i purchased the factory pinion seal, but found out today that it doesn't fit (I guess the new pinion is different?). So yet another aftermarket seal was installed this morning... And sure enough, by this afternoon after some driving, i could see it weeping again...

Any definitive advice on what is the best part to use for the seal, and any other parts i should look to replace to get this under control? Also, any tips on install that might be contributing to the problem? I have not done the installs of the seals myself, but would love to convey any words of wisdom to the mechanic that might get this solved.

Thanks!

The seal also needs to be installed at the proper depth so it does not interfere. If you have an aftermarket yoke, it may need the dust shield removed to clear the housing / seal. Also if the preload is loose it can cause a leak.

you need the older OEM pinion seal for the aftermarket 4.88 pinion which is smaller diameter than the OEM pinion used after about 03. If they've been ordering off your vehicle details that would explain OEM not fitting. I think you need 90311-38066.

Thanks Guys! This is excellent! Really appreciate the insights.

Carl, can I source the part through you, or should I follow-up with Toyota directly?

Thanks

Simo
