been rebuilding a couple of older Webers for fun...

Man, these things are well built. Sturdy, thoughtful design, parts everywhere even for old ones....

Compare that to my newer fancy-looking stainless steel thin metal falling apart rusting through piece of Made in China cr@p..... (bought new at Costco of all places... and no I don't want to return it after this long....) That was a bad purchase.

The Webers are admittedly very expensive, but worth the extra $$ in my book... A good purchase if you can keep it for a while. The fancy crapola one I got was 1/2 the price but you can't get parts very easily and when you can they are very expensive, and the burners and heat plates are already shot after 3 years. The Webers will literally go forever with burners and heat plates replaced every 10 years or so I'm guessing....

Amazingly, you can get some Webers for free or very inexpensively on CL and they are very easy to rebuild... Fun too, much easier than working on a Landcruiser for that matter.... :)

I totally agree....have had my gas Weber grill for 13 years. New flavor bars and grills every few years (using it 3-4 times a week), and it just will not die. The original ignitor still works too.

My brother was working for BBQs Galore and another high end BBQ vendor...kept trying to sell me on a $2K grill. Sorry, not impressed with the stainless steel wonders. A gas Weber grill and a 22 inch Weber BBQ kettle are all you need (around $500 for both if you shop around). Replacement parts are everywhere.

I've found more than a few around my neighborhood on large trash pickup day, and have rescued a few to give to friends.

They come in handy for grilling brats when working on the Cruiser, listening to ball games and drinking beer!

the one thing I'm not too fond of on the less expensive webers are the controls on the right hand side tablet. Lots of wasted space.

Already have one of my restored Webers flaming away, and second one shortly online...

I agree with weber grill recommendation
I got mine from wife as a wedding gift and boy does it grill nicely. Love to sear tuna steaks on it and a big hunk of steak.
Anyone have any favorite recipes?

Webers rock. I've had my gas Weber for at least 15 years and it still works like new. I replaced the ignitor twice and the flavor bars and grills, once. Also replaced the main regulator once. We use it at least 2 times per week. Once you put in stainless bars and grills, your days of replacing them is over. The ceramic ones do not last more than 5 years or so.

There is nothing bad about them. Over built, heavy, will run all day everyday. Parts available in every hardware store in America.

yup, good stuff. Even the sparkers are still working after some 10+ years.

Got my second Weber connected to NG so I can keep it going forever... No more refills, much cheaper...

I'm going to convert the bigger one to NG too. I tried it with the propane jets and NG and it was struggling to get to 450F. I don't think it would sear very well. I'll just drill the jets and see.

I'll see if I can make myself some heat plates with some SS sheet, a shear and a brake... Yea, fun stuff!

I bought my trusty kettle used, and break it down for camping whenever I need it. probably my second-favorite piece of gear I take on my trips, my first being my Weber Smokey Mountain!

Those two, and a sleeping bag are a recipe for a fun campout.

I'm jealous!!! We don't have mesquite to cut and burn at will here. Best flavor in the smoking world, IMO!!!!

Since this thread started up, I've been considering getting a Weber kettle, but then I came across this Weber Performer. Anyone have one of these??

That would replace my other charcoal grills (sm, med, and large), and allow me to put the turkey fryer and charcoal chimney away, too, therefore substantially cleaning up my patio. :D

I miss my old Weber Kettle bbq. Next bbq island I make is going to include one for sure! Having gas AND charcoal/wood options is the best of both worlds.

I do have a couple of charcoal grills too, but can't say I feel compelled to use them with several gas grills around.
Can you really taste the difference? And if so, wouldn't some smoke chips help the gas one a lot?

I have had the performer for a couple of years. I love that thing, it uses gas to ignite the charcoal. It takes the small bottles and they would run out at the wrong time, so I converted it to take a large propane tank. Best grill I have ever had.

Thanks for the review. I already have the converter hose, so that's a done deal. Wow, there's a 'new' one on my local CL for $130. Can't wait to see it!!!

Yup, I saw them NIB at Home Depot for $330. I'm all over it if they'll reply to me. LOL on the "hard to find".....unless you look at HD/Lowes.

Their desc and picture:

WEBER 22.5 Inch BBQ Grill, assembed and ready to go. Excellent Condition. Ash-catcher compartment for easy and clean disposal. Included: Brand new weber 22.5 inch grill, spark proof/fire proof mat, "green" charcoal lighter, near full 16.6 lb bag of kingston charcoal. This grill is hard to find-- in fact, we couldn't find one anywhere around town! If you like a charcoal grill, this is it!!

I have a Weber grille that I really like, I special ordered it with stainless steel grates, they stay clean with very little trouble.

But if I was buying another grille and could afford it, I would buy a Ducane. Very well made, last I looked at them.

e999: For me I use and appreciate our gas bbq mainly for the convenience of quick grilling and no ash clean up. But there are times, when cooking larger cuts of meat or bird I like a round Weber kettle with lump (ideally). Turkeys, standing rib roasts, loin roasts, etc. They just turn out better all the way around than gas + wood chips.

And I can get higher temps in a kettle type charcoal grill for those awesome pizzas (800* F). Not saying they don't turn out OK out of our 75kbtu Dynasty but they are much better out of a Weber type kettle.

The dryness difference of wood versus gas heat also plays apart in all the above.

Couldn't live with one or the other without bitching somewhere along the line...but both is the cat's meow IMHO.

I agree, I love my Weber BBQ. I have 2, a big one for home, then a smaller rectangular one for camping...use less wood or charcoal.... and them meat is always predictable... love it..
