Hey Guys

Thinking of ordering a 30L AUX water tank for my rig that tucks up nice under the body!

The company i am going through sells identical tanks and one is Stainless and One is Aluminum. The SS one is $125 more then the aluminum one.

Can you guys tell me your opinions on the pros and cons of each?

Aluminum is obviously lighter, but would it oxidize and mess with the water?

Any info would be awesome!

Thanks
Kevin

I like this idea. Where are you thinking of mounting this? There seems to be loads of room under drivers side pan between the body and the frame. I'm curious though to know how much of this space sliders would take up.

I would think aluminum's only downfall would be strength. The same rock might only dent the SS tank, but poke a hole through the Al. one. About oxidizing, I highly doubt it, sodas and beers come in aluminum cans, and they are both more corrosive than plain jane water.

I've been thinking about this too and was leaning towards the space under the floor board somewhere. Question is how many tanks and what size/shapes would they end up being? Any way for a RV plastic tank would fit in that area?

Kevin,
Can you give us some more info on your vendor?

Thanks.

Another "in car" alternative is the Kelty 10L water pack

No, that is why i am asking!

:D

I doubt SS gives any significant advantage to ordinary steel other than rust and that's easy enough to wash out. I'd go galvanised as it allows more flex, it's easier for me to weld, and a lot cheaper.

If you're considering carrying a gerry can, don't get the PVC types. Makes the water taste really bad.

thanks guys

i guess i need to get some sliders before i give this anymore serious thought

thanks

Alu is no good for potable water. Bad for you, not used in boats anymore either...

AL is one of the only minnerals that your body doesn't process very well and it deposits in the lower base of the brain. It makes water taste really bad, AL cans are coated on the interior. It also has a galvanic response with steel and water. Galvanised is bad as well. If you weld have your resperator on. Very bad off gassing. SS all the way!

Aluminum is neuro-toxic, galvanized is universally-toxic, go with stainless steel then get some Slee stainless steel brake lines and use as straws for when yer workin under yer rig!!!

Kevin:

See my post on EXPortal. I suggest 3/8" welded poly. There is a company in Hollister who makes them custom. They made a 38.5 gal tank for my trailer. Better and cheaper than metal.

Also, think 12V - 1.5GPH Shurflo pump. REALLY a good idea. Needs a manula gravity drain and stainless filler pipe, too.
