I am in the process of replacing all of my water hoses (main, oil cooler, heater, etc...) so I have my battery/tray/alternator/bracketry out of the way. The truck (1/80 '40) has 50K miles on it and was running great until I noticed the fuel pump was spewing (replacing that too).

Question: should I take this opportunity to refresh the water pump?

Coolant was nice and green... thermostat housing was not terribly corroded inside. I was actually on the verge of running it for the season with the original hoses until the fuel pump went. Some of the water hoses were a little crunchy when I removed them, but clean inside. My heater control valve is stuck open as well, so I decided to bite the bullet and replace all of the fuel and water hoses and rebuild the heater unit.

Whaddaya think... do the water pump too?

How old is the water pump? Only 50k so is it the original? If not, who installed it? You or a trusted shop?

Basically when I'm at one of these crossroads, I imagine what would happen if say the water pump failed on me like next week while I'm out and about in whatever I'm driving. Can I survive or afford it getting towed back to my place and the downtime while I source one?

If this was my daily and/or the water pump is old or I am unsure of the age, I'd replace it. Caveat here though; these belt driven water pumps don't generally catastrophically fail. They tend to start weeping first before pissing out the coolant. How's your look?

Thanks for that! I've only had the truck since last July, but as far as I and PO know, almost everything is original. After working all over the truck since July, I really think it's the original pump... heck, the truck even had the original fuses still in it! The whole top of the engine is very dry including the the pump area and around the thermostat housing. And the fan turns smoothly with no play or strange noises (just replaced both belts too) and the water temps were normal every time I drove it.

It couldn't hurt. They're not going to get any cheaper or easier to find. Maybe get the radiator rodded out while it's out too.
Oh... didn't realize the radiator needed to come out for this... but since the hoses are off, no big deal.

Do you have the oil cooler? My 77 has the cooler and I have a brand new one out in the barn that does not have the cooler hose casting. Yours free for shipping from 98532 if it's what you need.

Yeah, mine has the oil cooler, but that's an awesome offer! Too bad... we are even both in Western WA!!

How about a suggestion on a radiator specialist in the Seattle area?
@Skreddy suggested Stan's Radiator in Lake Stevens to me but I'm pretty sure he told me he's heard good things but hasn't used them himself personally.

I need to have mine re-cored and was going to give them a call. Do tell who you end up going with.

I just called Nick at Torfab... they take theirs to Greenwood Radiator, so I thought I would give them a call.

EDIT: I'll be taking it in tomorrow.

I ordered a new water pump (OEM) from cruiserteq as well... so no cruising for me for at least another week or two, but hey, at least I will have high confidence when I finally make it out from under! Need to get an axle flip done on my flatbed anyway, so plenty to do!

i have most or all of your needed oem toyota parts in-stock and ready to ship out today if need be ?

- water pump YES fan clutch option YES oil cooler option ,

I have not used Stan’s but know a few people that have and they have only good things to say. I’ve used Kens in Burlington and was pleased. Heard good reviews from greenwood as well.
I just bought a water pump from Toyota for the olive 79 I’m working on. Good price and oem Toyota for w/ oil cooler, w/ fan clutch.

While you’ve got the rad out, hoses replaced, bin off?….. Follow the rabbit!

Let us know how it goes. I’d like to have mine done as well this winter and not sure who to use. Thanks!
