Was it a bad idea by Toyota.

in reality the only issues i have seen is the VSValves themselves dying a sudden death, actually this is a common problem with these setups. nice thing is you can get replacements (12V) at the wreckers for cheap of any Toyota car with an auto tranny.

Mechanical linkage is always better, anything electrical can malfunction, mechanical can as well if it isn't engaged once in a while.

You can unbolt the vac set up of the end of your transfer case and put the manual stick set up on it ay ?

when i sat my spare h55 box from a fj73 with vac next to my other spare fj75 h55 box from the out side (in the shifter end of the transfer case) all the bolt holes were the same,so i was wondering yea something along those line you need the non vac half with the shaft that pokes out for the 4 hi n lo stick end on it then you could put it on a vac transfer??

ummm, no.
to do it right you need the front 1/2 of the manual t/case...

Yes and No, that is ONE way of doing it, can also be done by converting the VAC transfer case to manual shift. I'm going through this conversion at the moment. You still need a few parts from a manual case, which I am using as a donor to convert the VAC case. Main part is the 4x4 shifter snout that replaces the VAC module.

Thank you ,John. Question on vacuum valves answered. Ill rig up a relay system to the gearbox switch to close the vacuum valves after locking up. It'll be much simpler that using Toyota's box ( Ok Its not a computer)

Our donor PZ73 also has electric hubs. Talk about Japanese girlie wagons.... Luckily the wagon was 24 volt - the same as our ex mil 109 Landie.

i would love elc hubs specially if you need to get out in bad weather :D

i have never had an issue with any of mine but those that sell the replacement kits don't like them. USUALLY the only time they fail is if the idiot that takes them apart doesn't read the manual and trys to slam them back on without retaining the tiny brushes back out of the way...

i have yet to see them fail under normal off road use.

of course the other claim is the elec are only held on by 4 bolts instead of the old 6 bolt pattern... problem is the newer are actually held on by 10 bolts, not 6... sales pitch still flows easily from those that want to make money.

now, if someone just doesn't like electronics then i can see ditching the elec hubs ... but i like them.but then i also like Warn manual, Asian manual... the only ones i don't like are the auto hubs...i have had a couple of them let go over the decades...

wadi, where are you located? If you're looking at cdn-spec BJ70s they have manual shift.
