I have always heard that you need a winch rated at 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle. If my 80 is 6200 lbs then a 9.5xp would be fine. Is there something I am missing? I'm sure a 12k is sweet, but not sure it is worth the money.

Josh,

Of course it's going to depend on the type of wheeling you do. You can get the 9.5 and a snatch block. One advantage of the smaller winch is that it weighs a lot less. I had the same question and Christo recomended the M8000. So far so good. I used it on the Rubicon and it was great.

been wondering the same thing.

That also brings up the question of whether getting a less expensive brand but higher load rated winch might be a reasonable substitution. E.g. if a 8000 lbs Warn is fine, would a 12000 MileMarker, say, be just as suitable?

Warn 8K with a snatch or even 2 snatches will get you out. I really dont see the need for a 12k.

Stay with the better quality winches. We bought a bunch of MileMarkers and were not happy.

One other thing to consider is rope capacity. Most smaller winches have less rope. Not a concern for some, but in AZ and the SW, winch anchor points can be few and far between, so using a snatch block, while theoretically possible, can't always be done if you are by yourself.

true, but an extra 100 or 200 ft of rope is not that bad to carry in the truck...
dang snatchblocks are surprisingly expensive though...

what happened with the MM?
is there really such a big difference in quality with Warn? in what respect?

Warn 12K ROCKS! :bounce: :bounce2: :bounce: :bounce2:

End of story. :D

I traded a nailgun for a M8000. It's pulled out an F-250 Diesel Crewcab up to it's floorpan in mud, pulled a TJ out sideways with mud up to the headlights, as well as a few other rigs. No sweat so far. Add a snatchblock or two and you'll likely be fine.

Eric,

I have pursposely shortened by winch cable to about 75'. This helps keep the amp draw to a min and the rpm is higher (warn m10k) However, it truly sucks to carry the remaining cable (with eye loops at each end) coiled up in the back! That s*** is unwieldy and a nuisance when it comes to storage, not to mention heavy. A friend is giving me 100' of some sort of a syn rope as an extension for doing past favors. This will work out much better I think.

Dittos, wire rope is a PITA to handle off the spool.

Is the m8000 better than the 9.5? Will they mount on the ARB

Dont know where your paying at, but most of the ones Ive looked at are really not that much different in price. Less than 100 usually. Thats less than two snatch blocks. Makes more sense to me.

I pulled an excusion on of a ditch before with my x8000i and a snatch block. I personally would feel safer with the 9500xp on my cruiser. I think the m12000 is overkill.
