Forgive my lack of knowledge but will these work on a 71 or 82 FJ40?

As long as they are fine spline and not course spline. The course ones only have 6 teeth so they are easy to tell apart. I believe the 71 were course but someone else might be able to chime in.

Looks like fine spline started in 76 so these would work on your 82 not your 71 unless your 71 was updated.

I thought 78 was the first year for fine spline and the only year for 4:11 fine spline on a US 40

76 to 78 was fine spline long birfs, 79 went to short birfs and upgraded knuckles. I think sometime in 78 the rear pinion went to fine spline.

You can get the warn 7309 service kit for these hubs from summit racing for 30 bucks to get the correct gaskets, new Allen screws and lock washers.
