I have an 8274 Warn and when I winch in the winch just clicks sometime? If I click it a couple times it grabs and winches as it should. This doesn't happen all the time but I would certainly prefer that it grabs every time I hit the button. Any recommendations? I already cleaned the wires. Thanks in advance for any input that may solve this issue, L.

Assuming you checked and cleaned all the connections, it could be the switch in the controller going bad, or one of the solenoids in the control pack is going bad.

Does it do it in forward and reverse?

I have only noticed the symptom while winching in. Thanks for your attention, L.

Is it old generation with 4 solenoid pack or a newer unit with an electronic contactor in the switching box?

Sounds like a bad solenoid. Look for an Albright style electronic contactor to replace the 4 solenoid
pack. They are inexpensive and should cure this. This is a long term fix, best value for your money.

This is a great fix for sure...but if one wants an inexpensive repair...go to Napa and get OEM Warn solenoid for $25. Warn part # 72631.

Good part# John. $14 on Amazon!

You guys are awesome! It appears that there are (4), replace them all as precaution exercise?

I only replaced the one that was bad. I bought 2 & kept one as a trail spare.

Find the one that's bad. It's a bit of a chore if you have the very old style solenoid. The are not readily available. If it's made in the last 20 years 72631 will work

72631 appears the same? 4x on eBay new is only $53. How does a person bench test a solenoid?

Activate the coil with 12 volts, then measure the resistance between the mains. Should be very low like under 1 ohm.

Ok, here's the plan. Replace all (4) and then measure and keep best (2) as spares. You guys are awesome. Thank you for your input.

Good plan...that will work.

For those that read this, for whatever it's worth, when my solenoid went out I called Warn and told them I had a 8274 & was ready to just order the contactors from them and replace my solenoids. They suggested no on the contactors for the 8274 and to just replace the bad solenoid.

I've got and use two 8274's...one is over 20 years old. I've only had that one solenoid go bad in all that time.

Why did Warn say no to contactors for the 8274? Don't they sell a contactor pack for the 8274?

I think the contactors are interchangeable from one winch to another. Warn didn't actually say to not use the contactors on my 8274. He was mainly saying that it wasn't necessary to spend that amount of $$ when a $25 solenoid wound get me working again.

If I do have another one go out I will probably use the spare solenoid I still have...but I don't think it's 'bad' to go the contactor route with the 8274..,just more $$.

Is the DC88P the right contactor for the 8274?

Don't know for sure on that one, but here is what a lot of folks use:

Superwinch contactor from Summit Racing: part# 90-14452.

A discussion on a different thread in this very forum (don't have time to find it right now), including some input from an Albright representative, concluded that although the Superwinch part referenced above by John looks just like the Albright DC88P, it is in fact not made by them - probably a Chinese copy.

Nevertheless, I've been using the Superwinch/Summit Racing one on my 8274 for many years now with complete success, FWIW.
