do i need a voltage regulator on a chevy 3 wire alternator in a 74 FJ40 with a carb'd 350 (the 350 is a 74 with an HEI dist).

It depends on what a chevy 3 wire alternator is. It is not a Delco name that I recognize.

autolite pro-tech, P/N A7127m, The truck has one installed (volt reg)but the wiring harness was so jacked up, I couldn't tell if it even was connected to anything. BTW wired it the way i thought that it was and motor turns over but no spark. just asking cause the interwebs show some with and some without, my life would be easier without....i think

How are the terminals on the alternator labeled?
B - IGN - L - F - S -G ? What?

Rudi

not really labeled the alt has a post in the back with a nut on it. which i assume is batt. then a red and a white wire, that go into a two prong connector (which can only go on one way. the red wire i have connected to the ignition and the white going to a ground.

careful with the ammeter...

I think.... but who am I.... the white is for the "no charge" lamp.
The alternator is internally grounded.

Can you post a picture? Is there a label brand/model/type?

Rudi

Autolite is a Ford supplier. Go to alternatorparts.com to find out which model you have.

Alternator won't have anything to do with the lack of spark as long as the battery can turn the engine over.

sorry for the delay i will post up more in the a.m. just got off of work thanks for the help so far though. i think i need to focus on my spark issue and see if the charging is even really an issue.

well the massive smoke cloud that filed the cab and under my hood tells me i need to start over again. sooooo freakin annoyed
