Ok so it's not on an 80 but I get lots of nifty ideas from you guys here so I hope you bear with me.
I have a 1997 Ssangyong Istana aka Mercedes Benz MB100 van. Its powered by a Mercedes OM662 engine.
Recent work done last october 2012:
-new oem water pump
-new rad hoses
-new oem clutch fan by gmb
-newly rodded/overhauled oem radiator
-new oem rad cap
New oem coolant jug
-filled with correct coolant mix
Problem is at speeds over 110kph, the temperature starts to creep up to 3/4 of the gauge.
When the clutch fan was new, it would just keep silent and when temp would reach the halfway mark at speeds, I could hear it roar to life and lower the temp to below 1/2 again. Is that how is supposed to work? Lately I don't hear it working even as the temp goes up. It would sometimes come on at around 3/4 but not enough to pull the temp back to normal. I'm not losing coolant, btw. And there is no other fluid mixing with the coolant when you check the rad.
What could be wrong? Could adding silicone oil to the fan clutch help despite the relatively new fan clutch?
Local ambient temps here are hot. Ambient is around 37 deg celsius. Got me thinking that the oem fan clutch I got could have been designed for the colder Korean domestic market.
And for required 80 content: i just put in an new thermostat, water pump, and rad cap on my 80 during the timing belt change and she runs like a dream. Chalk one up for team Toyota.
