Just moved to Fl from Wy and my LV needs a/c. Anyone install the Vintage Air Magnum IV? Looks like I may lose the glove box. A finished picture sure would help me.

Thanks,
Dukes

I have been asking this question for a while. I have not seen much out there. I have been communicating w ICON about what they install. They say they use the Huricane 3100 from Old Air Products, but it is not plug and play. It will requir cutting and customizing, which I don't have a problem with. I want to have a system that looks reasonably factory.

I use a Nostalgic Air in my 45 pickup. Works great....can't put it over the first speed or it will get too cold believe it or not. Of course the 45 has a really small cab and mine is insulated very well(new gaskets, seals, window felts, dynamat, etc.). It mounts cleanly under the dash, doesn't take up much room at all which was a plus.....Vintage Air seemed to have a big system....didn't want to take away from leg room in that little cab. Glove box is unaffected. I removed my heater assembly(no real need in FL) and didn't even bother hooking up the heater portion. Maybe someday.

I just bought a 45LV and am considering AC options. I will probably go with the Nostalgic AC unit again simply because I love the way it fits. Obviously rear seat passengers won't get a bunch of AC but I'll just keep people out of the back for the hotter months. There should be no issue on cooling down the front area. Again, fresh gaskets will go on it and this one will get the Lizard Skin ceramic heat barrier spray throughout so it should be all good. Check out Nostalgic Air....really neat setup. I believe they list it under an FJ40 but it works on the 45s.

I saw this unit but in my opinion it looks like the other aftermarket add on kits, which I do to care for. I don't mind having to cut or customize the innards of my dash to achieve a more integrated look. If you have seen the LV's Jonathan Ward did, that is the look I am going for. I gues you would call it a resto-mod vs old school. I will try posting some pics.

the unit that goes under the glove box? doesn't that take room from the passenger? i'm looking heavily at the hurricane unit. looks to be almost exactly the size of the old heater.

tornado, I agree, the Hurricane is looking like the best choice, which is probably why Jonathan uses it. Here are some of the pics I have saved over the years. I found the accessory bracket used to mount the compressor and relocate the alt. to below several years ago and now I am not seeing it. I think it was Vintage air that sold the bracket, which was available as a stand alone part.

The Nostalgic Air tucks up really tight....no infringing on the passengers legs. That was a big consideration to me. I suppose you could color match one by painting it to the interior color....that would look pretty slick and it would hide it a bit. I suppose if you gutted the glove box, you could move it all up a bit. Maybe route some hoses under the dash or thru the dash. Nostalgic can probably build them any way you want. I'll try to post up a pic or 2 tomorrow...it's a slick setup. Best one for what I needed....I wasn't overly concerned with having it look aftermarket....kind of looks vintage aftermarket to be honest. I suppose you could mount it under a seat or something too.

When my 45 gets here, I'll have to take a look at all of it to see how it will fit.

Pics please. Thx

I didn't realize just how unfinished my truck is until I took a look at these pics! That exposed dynamat has to come off. I think I want to go with Lizard skin ceramic barrier and sound control. Going to do a 79 series build with that to test it out.....in any event, here are the AC pics. It's really, really tucked up. You'd have to have an NBA player in there to have an issue. What appealed to me was that it was very linear all the way across the dash....kind of hard to see at first look. If the chrome edge was off off of the vents, it would be really hard to see....

I think Nostalgic has an option for a vent on the drivers side.....just a corrugated tube with a vent....no big deal. I have the vents directed at me and again, that interior on the 45 is really small. It gets really cold in there. It's a little loud on higher fan speeds but it's right in your face. I'd love to put a remote unit under the seats in the 45 wagon but that wouldn't be ideal. I think I'll spray the Lizard Skin under the dash and in the glove box(maybe behind the dash board) to help 'tighten' up all that metal. That will really help. Included is a pic of when we first put it in....

Here's what mine looks like. Same system. I put in an old Brownie CB and made a casing for the RetroSound model one with the same dimensions, hung them like a cop car. Found the old Big Brute CB speaker at a yard sale. It all works great and looks pretty period to me. The CB and speaker are about the vintage of the truck. Lines on the AC are certainly "nostalgic."

Couple pics of the compressor. System blows cold but I am having trouble with the belt tensioning. Running alternator, fan and compressor on one belt. Need to come up with something better but had to move the radiator back a couple inches to accomodate the condensor, so I can't use two belts. Open to suggestions! Tought about going to an electric fan to save space.

looks really slick with the CB. Great set up. I run a 3FE in my 45 so I just used it's compressor with custom lines and a block off plate for where the old blower motor sat.....now there's a plate there where the lines pass thru. Works well.

How does the LV cool with the AC?

Thanks. Pretty happy with how it looks.

AC blows super cold and is comfortable for the front seats, but honestly I don't know how well it cools the back down. Probably not too well...it's a big space. My bigger question is about heat. Sacrificed the heater and put four three-way speaker boxes under the front seat. Sounds great and totally hidden, but I think the kids may get frostbite. Luckily they're too little to complain.

lol.....warm clothes will go a long way. Maybe some of those heat packets for longer trips.

I take it you didn't hook up the heater portion of the system? I know I didn't, not much of a reason for a heater here in Tampa(maybe one or 2 days just to remind yourself that in some places you HAVE to use a heater)....I bet hooking up an OEM 40 heater for the rear would be easy....might do the job and look legit.

Peterman, system looks nice. Few questions. Why and how did you move the radiator back? Would the condenser not fit in front between bib and radiator? Why did you not hook up the heat? Is the system designed to run a double pulley? If you could run the double pulpy do you think that would solve the belt tension problem you are having? Have you called Nastalgic to ask them what to do? What are all the cables that are coming through the fire wall? Are those a/c related? Thanks for the help.
