VIN tags on 80's hatch and tailgate? (1 Viewer)

does somebody know if the late 80s are supposed to have a VIN tag on the rear hatch and tailgate? Seemed like the last couple of 97s I checked did not have them there but yet had them on all the other usual places...
If there are supposed to be some, where should they be?

On my 1997 model:

Tailgate VIN is on the bottom (if the tailgate were up) in the very center. Visible only when the tailgate is down, in the area between the gate and the body.

Hatch VIN is on the bottom edge (if the hatch were down), on the driver's side.
