I took my 100 out recently and now have some highway vibration around 60mph. I'm running 35s. I've had the alignment done here at a local shop in Albuquerque and tires balanced twice. I'm still getting the vibration. Do you guys have a recommendation of a shop in ABQ that can get me running smoothly again?

Thanks guys!

You might need to spend the extra money to get the tires "road force balanced." My 35's on my heavy bead lock wheels shake pretty bad. Probably going to sell the bead locks because of it.

I've got them mounted now on the stock 16 inch rim. Can I get the road forced balance done at any tire joint?

Also check that your U-joints and drive shaft slip yokes are properly lubricated. You may need to replace one or more U-joints.

I get those "not so good vibrations" in my 92 as welll. Same speeds and not all the time. New tires (wrangler silentarmors 31") and new steering dampner, wheel bearings repacked and whole lot of wishing haven't made it go away. Had the shop check out the driveline and ujoints and they all look good for a truck with 217k on it. You are IFS so that is a whole different animal. Discount tire had a hell of a time balancing my tires. Went back twice and the previous silentarmors I had were out of round so they gave me a free one. What tires are you running? Hopefully not the WSA! Its probably GREMLINS!!!

Does the vibration happen when you apply/ let off the gas pedal at highway speeds? My FJC has been doing this for a while. I switched out the rear drive shaft U-joints which seemed to help a little, but the replaced U-joints did not look bad. I also lubed everything. When I get around to it, I will replace the front drive shaft U-joints because the remaining road noise seems more oriented to the front. The problem is definitely not progressing very fast. I do worry because the road noise started not too long after last summer's regearing; so, I just hope it's the front U-joints (EASIER FIX).

I'm running Duratrac Wranglers. They only have 4k miles on them. It ran pretty smooth for a few months then I took it out off road, did not air down and took the trail a little fast. I got it back on the highway and that's when it all started. I've had a mechanic look at and didn't notice anything broke/bent. It rides smooth up to about 60 and then is rough until about 73. There's a window from about 73 to 76 that is smooth again. I don't notice it becoming worse with giving it more gas. It seems to be tied to how fast or slow I'm going. Discount tire has now balanced them twice. Looks like there might be a third time.

Where did you do your Baja 1000 experiment? :D

Did not air down, hit bumps fast = bent rim(s)?

The guys at DT should've noticed a bent rim I'd think.

Are you able to discern the location of the vibes - front or rear?

Vibes coming through the steering wheel at all?

Do you have any leaking shocks? A tire could be bouncing at those speeds due to the natural frequency/resonance. A severely worn or blown shock would allow it to do a happy-dance.

Funny you should mention bent rims. The first time I took it to DT that was the first thing they said, "you've got a bent rim", then they changed their mind, no bent rim. They're always trying to sell me custom rims whenever I go there.

I feel the vibration slightly through the steering wheel. It's hard for me to tell if the vibration is coming from the front or the rear, kind of leaning toward the front though.

The carnage took place up near Cedro Peak of all places. I will mention that I'm disappointed that they graded that road. Just a dirt road now.

Shocks are new as of March also. Old man emu 2.5 inch lift kit. I'll check em out though.:bang:

Have someone drive ahead of you at speed say in a pickup truck and have another person in back of that pickup watch which side the play or bounce is coming from... Had this problem a while back with my old jeep and again with a sidekick, in both cases came down to worn steering components from hitting trail obstacles too hard! Good luck And drive safely!!!

That's a good idea. Thanks for the feedback!

That does it, no more Baja 1000 for YOU!!!!

Will definitely be using a little more caution out on the Baja. Spendy repair. It's nice to have a smooth ride again.

Turns out it was a twisted rear drive shaft...

How did you figure that out?

Also, picnic tomorrow at Oak Flats (see the separate thread). Bring your 100 out and introduce yourself. We'll be the ones with all the Toyotas!
