Have an opportunity to buy a full float rear axle with about 190k locally to replace my semi-float. Some surface rust, ebrake hold down bracket crusty with rust but otherwise looks ok. Open diff. What do y'all think the price range for it removed and ready to be picked up? The seller is a member, comparing the price to recent sales in the mud classifieds, it seems a bit high. Interested in opinions.

Its worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

With parts like this the fair market value will vary dramatically. Someone might pay $800.00 for the axle. Than a week later somewhere across the country someone might pay $100.00

And shipping on an item like that will cost $$$$$. Personally I would be willing to pay extra for a part like an axle if it was local so I could see it in person first and avoid shipping costs.

When I did an axle swap, unlocked to locked, the seller of the locked paid me $500 for the pair of unlocked. That was 7 years ago. In my current situation, if I had an axle taking room in my garage I'd probably give it away.

There is a big benefit to not having to ship and the ability to look at it prior. They are asking 1k though, I'd jump on it for that price if it were locked.

With a used part that isn't essential, I wouldn't buy unless it seems like a good deal.. That said, I have no idea what a reasonable price would be for this. $1K? No way.

FF $1000-$1200. Locked is about $2000

The last two unlocked axles I sold one went for 600 and the other 800. Neither had brake calipers on them.

I usually try to buy an unlocked full float axle for no more than 500 bucks. I've usually had no problem finding them for that price. Keep in mind you dont know its condition. Any more than that and Id start considering converting the semi float to a full float or other options.

500.00.......... Hell I pay almost twice that now for an unknown unlocked these days. Your are lucky to see those prices.

You can convert semi to full? Can you share an article on this conversion? Can you also convert to rear discs? That might be a great way to go!

FZJ80. I want to upgrade the rear axle on my 91 FJ80 to full-float and discs. Already upgraded the front brakes, now for the rear.

Ah, gotcha.

I thought they might just bolt up, but I am probably mistaken.

I personally prefer the drums. I think SF is fine for a lot of applications. Drum FF would be really cool.

I thought there was an article but I don't remember for sure. Basically you remove the drum backing plate, install an adapter to bolt on a full float spindle from a front axle. Than install the brakes. Maybe front range offroad had the parts? A machine shop could make an adapter as well.

As far as I've read the FZJ80 rear axles bolt right up. Does anyone else on here say they do not bolt up? That would be a deal breaker for me.

Look at my thread on Rebuilding Trusty. I converted an FJ60 rear axle to full floating. I used Front Range Off Road adapter flanges with the front wheel hubs from my FJ40 front axle. Used the same size rotors had been on the front axle and bought Reman Toyota Land Cruiser calipers from NAPA. Front spindles from Man a Free.
