i have an opportunity to purchase a 1974 fJ40 for $900. It is in pretty bad shape. It looks like all the parts are there.

All the parts are 'mostly' there

$900 is not a bad price... The body is shot it looks like... You can get new repro tubs ... Or aluminum ... Or fiberglass

Are you doing the work?

Welcome to Mud!
Thanks for responding. I will not be doing the work my self. I would like to try to do some of the minor stuff, but the major restoration will hopefully done by a professional.

I want to buy it , I just don't know how hard it is to get the parts to restore it. I know nothing about these vehicles.

That vehicle is going to require a ton of work, and money. I am over $5K into mine, doing all the work myself, it was in a lot better condition than that one is. I would offer them $500, if the entire drivetrain is there and intact. Hell if the engine runs, drop the $900 and run with it.

Its hard to make a good call from one picture. For instance what does the floor look like? What seats does it have? Heaters? You have hard top and doors, are they any good? If the motor turns over and all the driveline is there, its pretty hard to go wrong at 900.00. Just be warned if your not doing the work it would be very easy to drop another 15,000.00 to get it right.

I agree that $900 is a decent price if most everything is there and it has a clear title.

At least the bezel isn't upside down.. yet..

I'm in the process of restoring a '73 FJ40 and I believe you'd be able to get all the parts you need to get it running and on the road. Like others have stated, be prepared to spend some dough.

Body work, particularly in the rear, will be costly. However, if the engine runs, and the tranny, transfer case and differentials are okay, you'll need brakes, lights, shocks, etc.

If you want it to look like new, figure $20k plus if you don't do the work yourself.

Lots of luck!

I think the 900.00 is a good deal and would be a fun project if you have the time and money and are able to do most everything yourself. If you can't and plan to have someone else do most of the restoration I wouldn't buy it!
