Hello All,
I recently purchased an ‘81 BJ40 w/ a 3b swap (RHD, 12v). I’ve been reading through these forums for the past several months, and you all have been crucial in helping me work on this truck, and I thank you for that. This is my first post, and I’d really appreciate any help you could provide regarding the 3b alternator, specifically the vacuum pump hoses. The PO swapped out the stock alternator for a single wire NAPA replacement, and piggy-backed two Dorman vacuum pumps to run off the ignition wiring. Since these pumps aren’t intended to run around the clock, naturally they are burning up. I’ve installed four wheel disc brakes, but the brake pedal is hard as a rock, and will only move about an inch. I suspect the vacuum pumps are the culprit, and have ordered a stock alternator from Cruiserparts. Problem is, no one stocks the vacuum inlet/outlet hoses. I ordered through amayama, but they are discontinued. To those who’ve had custom braided hoses made, what specs did you give to ensure banjo fittings and hose diameters were correct? Without the stock setup or FSM, I’m shooting in the dark here. Any help from fellow Cruiser owners would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, meant LHD. I suspect this puppy was an import from South America, but can’t tell for certain. Runs great, but I’m working on swapping the glow plugs and bypassing the glow controller as it was missing at purchase. PO had bypassed the controller by attaching both wires on the same side and kept 8.5v plugs, so this thing runs rough at startup. Swapping for the 10.5v NGKs in hopes it will help (right now 15secs of white smoke and rough startups.) Installed Bosch primer pump in place of leaky stock pump (thanks @lostmarbles). After the alternator swap just gotta fix a leaning issue caused by inverted shackle (PO installed OME springs but didn’t upgrade shackles.). That’s all my ramblings for now, but it’s great to finally introduce myself on the forum!

Looking at the picture of your alternator, looks like you have the banjo bolt, bring that n the alternator to a hydraulic shop and they can prob find the right banjo that will work, and the matching hose, make sure you make one side of the hose swivel so it will fit properly.
I’ve some used parts at the shop can take pictures later

There in no inlet and outlet hoses for vacuum. Only the lubrication hoses have this.

The large metal spout is for the brakes and the smaller outlet can be for aircon fast idle and/or vacuum t/case shifter on later models.
These hoses are just metric size rubber vacuum hose, they are not unique to Toyota. You just need to measure the outside diameter in mm of the metal pipe you want to attach it to. Buy it by the metre and cut to length. The vacuum is only 6 psi on most brake/vacuum lines. Looks like 12mm and 4mm inside diameter to me.

The inlet and outlet oil hoses are still available for the 3B. The outlet hose only need a banjo fitting at the oil pump end.
You may even be able to use the 2H braided hoses , but the lengths maybe different.
But as Simon says, you could go to any hydraulic shop. They would be the same thread fitting as any Japanese or European truck

Thank you for the replies. @roscoFJ73, apologies if I'm using the wrong terminology, I am referring to the lubrication inlet/outlet hoses, but I didn't realize that smaller outlet on the vacuum side was for aircon/fast idle. I don't have aircon so I assume I just leave that one plugged. I'm a total newb who's always wanted one of these trucks and figured a Land Cruiser would be the perfect vehicle to wrench on and gain some experience. I'll look into the hydraulic shop option, was just hoping there'd be a pre-fabbed option I could slap on there, and have had zero luck finding the oem inlet/outlet hoses. Wish me luck on wiring up the new alternator-The PO had the electric vacuum pumps wired directly to the ignition and cut the harness from the original OEM alternator, so I'll have to do my research as to how the oem alternator wires up. Again, valuable learning experiences ;)

Correct.
I'm not sure if they ever came like that, probably for the 1980s - models

I think the vacuum pump is the same as the later 3B and 2H engines and there are still lubrication hose part numbers for them.
The French company Partsouq have them listed. You could also try Megazip.

And I also seem to remember the last of the B diesels had the vac pump built into the front of the engine, but you would need a lot of parts to accomplish that.

I'm guessing the electric pumps were running full time and that's what killed them. To my knowledge, the pump you have has a bypass valve that lets in air when it has enough vacuum
