My buddy's 1997 has a vacuum leak from somewhere. His mechanic tried using smoke, but cannot find it. It will barely idle. We had to use the hand throttle to drive it back this weekend. Any good techniques or advice where to check. Sounds like it's from the lower intake area where the hoses are.

Im sure you checked it
But did you inspect the rubber intake tube really well?

Systematically replace each vacuum line one-by-one to eliminate any faulty lines.

Vacuum hose is cheap and if they have never been replaced it won't hurt as they are probably dry and brittle.

I have the same "mystery" vacuum leak...replaced all visible and easy to get to hoses, it drove so good I filled it up with fuel and bought some wax to shine it up. Then same symptoms returned ...? Does anyone have a clear diagram of All vacuum hoses on the 1997? Also a confirmation of exact metric size would be helpful as locally here everyone just deals in English size hose...which I made work but the lack of precise size might be my current problem.

Thanks for any help available.

Are you 100% sure its a vacuum leak?

Did you remove the oil fill cap and inspect it for cracks and seal?
