FJ45 was not running when I got it. Does this box need to be rebuilt (or can it be)?
What type of new hoses do I need?

yes it can be rebuilt, IIRCC there is a diapgram inside

if staying with vacumn shift keep it
going with floor shift rebuild it

no idea on the hoses

You can also test the functionality of the vacuum shift on the transfer case by applying vacuum to the lines. If your 4WD indicator light is working you will be able to determine everything is fine down at that end.

I may be rebuilding this in my 64 fj40. I am currently about to test this part in your pictures though. I just ordered parts a few days ago to change back my floor shift to the vacuum dash shift. I have everything apart so was hoping to check / overhaul before reassembly

Probably don’t need anything but replacement hoses. Auto parts store vacuum-type hose (non-collapsable) should be adequate.
