I did a search on this and could't locate any information on it, but what are the drawbacks/problems with doing a V-8 swap with a three on the tree and vacuum transfer case? Can it be done or do I need to go the floor shift route? FYI - I have done a V-8 swap in a FJ55 with a stock 4-speed so I'm familiar with that process. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Hi All:

Oh, this swap has been done many times over the years, but the consensus is that the J30 three-speed tranny is marginal at best with a V-8 engine; the H41/42 four-speeds are a much better choice - not only for strength but for general driveability.

If you spend any time in the "for sale" section you'll see a three-speed tranny adapter show-up.

Regards,

Alan

i did that swap many times years ago before there were 4 speeds .the 3 speed is okay for general use if you are used to it .big problem is you switch the front and rear d shafts to move egine forward for clearance.if you figure a way to keep engine in stock location the 3 on the tree may work but i dont think its worth it.vick hickey raced a v8 powered cruiser in baja with a 3 speed and finished the race.the 3 speed swap is cheaper and easier than the 4 speed but as josie pointed out the 4 speed is a better tranny .a floor shifter for the tranny and the 4x4 will make the swap much easier good luck

I have all the adaptor parts for a three speed on the floor arrangement, front saddle and rear tranny to SBC bellhousing plates, etc, plus tranny and T-case (which need rebuilt.). They can be had for real cheap if you want to look into this.

I put this Advance Adaptor setup in a '72 FJ40 way back in 1979. Am just now finishing up a switch over to Splitcase and an h55f 5-speed.

Pm me if interested. :wrench:
