Following up on the Procomp snatch strap (or not) thread, I was wondering about the following:

I am thinking that it's OK to use a snatch strap as a "regular tow strap" i.e. pulling on it slowly with a winch or another vehicle, since presumably it's built to withstand the greater stress of the snatch recovery.
Also, I vaguely remember reading someplace that "they" recommended to use the snatch strap only as a tow strap after a number of uses or when the signal threads do their thing.

So, OK to use a snatch strap for slow pulling?

thx

Of course!

Eric-you worry way too much about this stuff. When you're stuck, you end up taking way more chances other than whether you have a "snatch" or a "tow" strap. I have been in the postion of having 2 30 foot straps connected to a 20 foot chain, connected to the end of my winch cable to winch someone out of bottomless snow. Not ideal, but you get the idea. That's why you get a really thick strap, so there is lots of reserve strength regardless of what you do with it.

E, you need to do more real wheelin and less web wheelin! Find yourself a good group of experienced guys, let them know you're kinda new at this and go have a blast. You'll learn tons just from doing it.

P.S. I have two TOW straps that I have been using as snatch straps for 3 years. GASP! :D

if stuck, go for it, but ideally you'd have a seperate winch extension strap, as using the snatchies for a constant pull will make them loose some of their elasticity, and will shorten the straps life span.

again, if your stuck and it will help, then go for it, but ideally you'd have straps or cable for a non- snatch recovery, or a tow home

one of the best articles I found on straps was a test done by some australian outfits testing a bunch of straps on a tensile machine. IIRC there was a lot of variation in meeting or not the advertised specs. And IIRC the ARB ones were not rated very highly.
