Becuase the truck is in Japan and the local 4x4 joint is in SoCal. This is a vehicle I'm buying for my move overseas. Consensus from those in Okinawa (where I'm going) is that car parts are much cheaper here in the US.

I would advise NOT going with the original toyota shocks ....they are useless.
Generally Tokico are considered good but on the 78/79 series (before the V8) the shops in oz were flat out removing the complete suspension inc the shock from new vehicles and throwing them in the binWhy would you say they are useless? Do you have some data to back that up? OEM shocks are made by Tokico in Japan. I've replaced the original 17 year old shocks on my BJ74 with new OEM units. If you're not going for a lift then the OEM shocks are a good bang for your buck shock.
