upgrade from 285/75/16's, how big to go (1 Viewer)

OK, i am thinking about going bigger than the current 285/75/16's on the 2000 UZJ

its lifted with Slee t-bars and OME springs, about 2+ in the front and 2.5 or so in the back.

I am not sure if 35's(315's?) will fit and I am not sure I want to go that big anyway.

so whats a good size to upgrade to?

(the 285's will get swaped the the LX470)

looking for advice/thoughts

I think my 295 Nitto's look killer on my truck. With my lift, they look like the tires were made for the lift i.e. perfect balance.
 
I'm happy with my 305s, though they rub ever so slightly.

I think with the Slee Ts, that shouldn't be a problem, but I'm no expert.
 
Go to a 295/75/16. My buddy just went from 285's to these on his Super Duty and man what a difference.

Or go to 305/70/16. They only rub in hard drop situations, but the foot print is wider, giving you more stability on the rocks, and more grabbing surface.

Edit mine has no lift, hince the rub
 
what's wrong with 285s?
unless you plan on spending your life on the rocks, 35s are not really necessary IMHO
 
I like the 295's. It is probably the max size you can put in the spare tire location if you have a tow hitch.. if that's of any importance to you.

also it's nice to have the same size on more than one rigs. Lots of potential spares, food for rotation etc
 
305/70 R16s are smaller than 285/75 R16 :rolleyes:

I think your only options (for mainstream tires) are 295s or 315s.

The 315s will fit.
 
285 roughly= 32.7X11.5
305 roughly= 33x12.5

305 is bigger and wider and heavier
 
Tire size designation and actual tire size are rarely the same.

According to their website, a BFG AT/KO measures:
285/75-16 is 33" and 11.3" wide (on 8" rim)
305/70-16 is also 33" and 12.2" wide (on 9" rim)

So in this case, they are equal in diameter.
 
Are you planning to regear when you move up to 35's? I can't imagine running 35's without regearing although John Schotts swears it's not so bad.

The wider and heavier part always holds true but manufacturers often match on the hieghts between 285's and 305's on R16's. I've got Mud tire sizes handy so here they are if anyone is interested:

nothing is wrong with them.........but if I can go up in size a wee bit then I would like to. and no I really don't think I want to run 35's

prolly go with the 305's.

With the 285's, can you notice a difference in acceleration over stock-sized tires? Since there don't seem to be any LC100 gears in lower ratios, has anyone regeared the t-case? I've only seen t-case gears 10% lower, but that'll offset increasing the tire diameter by 3".
 
I didn't notice any difference........but then again I was use to 3fe's and 2f's ;)

The 305's to me clearly fill the fenderwell much better, plus gives more tread showing. Thus gives a more aggressive look, due to the width.
 
why is everybody so into tire looks?

just get the smallest tire that will do the job! If you think the extra inch will prevent you from gettng stuck in sand or from slipping down the mountain, then great. If not, why bother...?

Bigger / wider tires are more expensive, harder to find in a pinch, and introduce ride and suspension complications.

Function over form, folks!

Don't forget that bigger tires also means more rolling resistance, a much higher moment of inertia (slower acceleration), and more windage due to being up higher. All this translates into fewer mpg's. Ideally, you'd have a dedicated set of offroad tires like 305's and get by w/ the 285's around town.

Wider and heavier, sure. Taller? No. I should've said taller.
All manufacturers will vary in actual size of their tires, but mathematically, the 305s are a fraction of an inch smaller in diameter than 285s.

Here's the boring math...
285/75 R16 is a 285mm wide tire, of which, 75% of that width is the distance between the outside edge of the tire and the inside (wheel touching) edge, on a 16" wheel
-- 75% of 285mm is 213.75mm = distance between the outside and inside edge of the tire.
-- 70% of 315mm is 213.50mm = distance between the outside and inside edge of the tire.

-- divide 213.75 and 213.50 both by 25.4 (the number of mm per inch) to get 8.415354" and 8.405512" respectively. Multiply these numbers by 2 and add 16" and the end result is:

285/75 R16 = 32.83071" in height
315/70 R16 = 32.81102" in height

285s are taller... ;p
