I never noticed any oil consumption up until my last service, when I serviced outside the dealer for the first time. They used Shell HX8 5W-40 fully synthetic oil but by the time 10,000kms was up, I checked the dipstick and it was well below the lower dot (actually barely touched the lip of the dipstick).

I took it to a mechanic to immediately change the oil, but he said there was no leaks and it’s totally fine. I know they say a little bit of oil consumption is normal, but I’ve never seen it before and it certainly can’t be healthy for the engine to run below the min dot, even if it’s about due for service.

Should I change the PCV valve? He said it’s not necessary, but I’d rather be safe than sorry

Edit: The oil was filled right up to the max dot at 140,000km. I checked 5,000kms later and it was slightly below the max dot.

I would change the PVC valve and watch the oil level.

I you sure they put in the right amount of oil in the previous oil change? Wouldn’t be the first time someone wasn’t paying attention during the refill.

Yes, I made sure it wasn’t overfilled like my dealer used to always do but it was perfectly filled right up to the top dot.

I checked periodically but stopped after around 5,000km because I thought it would be fine.

I had a same issue.
Oil burning and huge blue smoke coming out of my tail.
Mechanic told me that I have to possibly rebuild my engine(?).
$9 OEM PCV valve immediately resolved the oil consumption and horrible blue smoke when I start the engine.
Try to replace that cheap part first and report back.

I always make sure to service the car on time and never skip on any maintenance items, so I hope it’s just the PCV valve.

I asked around for the PCV valve today but it isn’t in stock in most places here. I’ll have it changed as soon as I can and will get back to you.

Update: I changed the PCV valve around 2 weeks ago at 153,000 km (95,000 miles). I wanted to change it sooner but literally none of the shops here stocked the part (probably because of the year-end). I ended up paying around $30 for the part + labour but was more annoyed by the wait.

I'm at 154,700 kms now and the oil level hasn't changed. I think the consumption only happened in the last 2,000 kms before the oil change so we'll have to wait a few thousand more kilometers before we know whether it's fixed. It's been roughly 5,000 kms since the oil change.

You can see the old PCV valve was quite dirty inside. It certainly felt heavier and less clicky than the replacement part.

Update 2: The oil level has lowered. I’m now halfway between the two dots. Currently at 156,160 km. It’s definitely still consuming oil.

If I’m not mistaken, that’s around half a litre/quart in just 1000 miles.
