Hey HDC Club Members,

MEETING LOCATION: Sky City Casino - 7 Sky City Rd drive, Acoma Pueblo, NM 87034

We are doing a snow run tomorrow, Saturday January 1st, 2022 - 10 am to 2 pm.

Lurch and I have decided to try Mount Taylor this year. We will be meeting at the Sky City Casino right off I40 before getting to Grants. There are three club members confirmed but all are welcome. Please post up if you want to join and/or text me at 505 803-0693. Otherwise, we will proceed once the three confirmed members arrive at the parking lot of the casino.

Confirmed members:
@lurch
@mbarela
@Poupon

Meeting Place - Sky City Casino parking lot
Meeting Time: 10 am - pull away shortly afterwards
Return Time: Ideal back on pavement around 2 or 3 pm to be back by dark thirty
Communication: 146.400 and/or cell phone

Things to consider:
  • Snow tire chains are nice to have. One set of tire chains is good, but chains for all 4 tires will give you the most peace of mind. AT tires are minimum.
  • Low gearbox and lifted for deeper snow is better. Stock vehicles are welcome. Just be prepare for strapping and digging out.
  • Some of us will have straps and winches, but bring what you have. I will bring a snow shovel and some recovery boards.
  • Layered warm clothes and boots are a good idea. Some extra dry clothes are welcomed after a day of snow play.
  • Picnic Lunch
  • Snow shoes/sled to play in snow during lunch stop
  • Pet friendly &smiles
Do post up if you wish to join us. Again, I will call the final location in the morning by 0800 am.

I've never poked around Taylor so I'm kind of leaning towards it. Talking to @krazykat69 it sounds like FR400 (16) on the Southside of Taylor is a fun climb on lava rock. A possible route could be to go up FR400 if there's snow play around on the trails for a bit and come back down when its time or if there is not much snow see about crossing the whole mountain and coming down Guadalupe RD by Cabezon.

Otherwise heading out to Abiquiu sounds good.

I like Mount Taylor as well. Leaning that way now that you put some details around it. I just casted my vote for Taylor.

Finger's cross for some sweet snow!

I am interested in any of the choices….. I have another friend that will be joining us also.

woot!

We are all headed to Sky City Casino off I-40 before you get to Grants as our meet up spot. I plan to arrive around 10 am. Do post up of you plan on attending and we will wait for you if you are running a bit late.

I have updated the intro thread with more details. Thanks all!

Looked kinda ugly out that way. Hope you guys are having fun!

A wonderful day in the snow on a great trail! The snow was the perfect consistency so traction wasn’t a problem. I‘m looking forward to visiting this trail again. No carnage or damage to report.

Looks like it was a beautiful day for a snow run!

awesome sauce. One of the folks I've wheeled with up here was just down in ABQ. She hit up Cedro and was looking for other frivolity. I let her know of the fun that is Mt. Taylor since she was heading out of town that way.

Mt. Taylor is good stuff. Last time I wheeled it was with Nick doing some Christmas tree shopping. It has a special place in my life. Wish I could have made it. Thanks for sharing.

Glad you all had a good time. That is a great back way up Mt Taylor. Not far from gas, at the bottom. Even has a RV park at Sky City for a base camp to explore the Zuni mountains too. FYI.
Could leave there and cross Mt Taylor and come out by Cabezon peak on Hwy 550. A multi day camping trip with lots of side FR's to check out on top. A summer possibility.

Sorry I didn't make it. I had my own winter driving on New Year's Day on my way to Ajo, AZ.
