unknown items on 2f head (1 Viewer)

My FJ40 is an Australian 1978 model, anyway my mate was looking at the motor the other day and commented that the head looked different to his 1980 FJ45 troopcarrier, the things that are different are the glow plug looking things on the manifold side of the head? There is one for each cylinder and the are mounted above the ports? What are they for , anyway thanks for helping to resolve this issue.

I'm guessing it's the air rail for the smog controls.
