Hi All:

Question for all you "hard core" off-roaders: What is the typical price for Unimog 404 portal axle assemblies in the US? Is this still a good route to follow for high ground clearance and low gearing, as well as a strong axle assembly?

Thanks for the advice!

Regards,

Alan

Nolen is right on the price. I got mine slightly cheaper, but that was several years ago and before they were really popular.

Keep in mind that price range is for bone stock stuff. You will have to account for any modification your want or require (shortening, changing drops, disc brakes, pinion conversions, etc..).

They aren't the only protals out there nor the only ones from mogs. There are also beefier versions of MOGs (406/416 and U1300) and narrower versions of the 404. Volvos C303s had protals as well. Check around and research what you want. I went with 404 MOGs, have yet to wheel'em and bust'em but look good under the rig.

i have a set of 404s for my next project. i did a lot of reading about the different axles and figured they'd be the way to go. i spent right around 6k for mine. 2 fronts, pinion conversions, air locker conversions, hydraulic rams, disc brakes on all 4 corners and axles were just rebuilt. i consider that a good deal.

for stock axles, you should be paying from $2k for a pair and up. a pair of fronts (steering axles) normally goes for $3k and up, but those prizes are for stock surplus used axles.

Thanks guys, for the portal axle info! Keep it coming!

What are you running for air locker conversions? Any Pics? I have been looking at just an air cylinder but haven't sourced the parts yet. I also wonder how the engagement will be.

Oh and sorry for the hyjack. :grinpimp:

i can get some pics up this weekend. mine uses an air ram at about 100psi. taradon is the expert on this stuff. he can give you a lot more info than i can.

i would but i won't be home till tomorrow night. every once in a while whan i'm not so happy i go out there and take a peek at em. brings a smile to my face everytime! :)

I think my neighbor has all the air cylinder stuff laying around for 404's. I bet he would sell it off, as he prefers the coat hanger and bungee cord locker :grinpimp:

that's funny rob!

i don't have my "large" dog anymore; had to put down my bull mastiff a year ago. :frown:
but i still have my rotty and my lab mix to warmly welcome any intruders! :grinpimp:

hey christo. your work was part of the inspirations for "project isabel" so it'll be my pleasure.
the centers are offset slightly, i'll take some measurements tonite and will get back to you guys.

taradon on pirate is THE MAN when it comes to mogs, so you might want to contact him for more detailed info. that's where i got these axles.

his latest work:http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=357386

pinion offset is 6.5"
pinion flange to center of axle shaft is roughly 19.5"

let me know if you need more info. ;)

Another thread HI-JACK....

Sorry to hear of your loss, my lab cross rotty of 11 years passed of last year.

Now have a new pound rotty mutt, what a sweet heart.

PS, love the look and disposition of the bull mastif, my favourite breed.

Cheers.

Rob
