Underground Bunker

Has anyone out there built an underground bunker?

I'm designing one and am looking for some interesting ideas.

I had thought of burying a 20 foot ocean container. It would be very sturdy, weatherproof and easy to lock. Plus cheaper than concrete.

There are caves all throughout the Mojave desert. Many are hidden so it migh be easier to put a door on a cave.

Depends on what you want it for.

I was kinda thinking the same thing, burying a C container, and using some excess 4'square concrete storm drain piping as a emergency exit. Kind of like an underground tunnel about 150' or so long that comes up to a "inlet" if you will
Just in case?.

Bomb shelter construction used to be a big business in the 1950's. There were companies that did nothing but build bomb shelters.

I have a customer who built one when they added on to the house.

It's 2.5' thick reinforced concrete top sides and bottom. Has an escape hole,a manhole cover that is covered with mulch in a planting bed, has ventilation tubes on two sides and a thick steel door for entry from the basement. It's about 20' square.

Kinda cozy...

A family friend had one and we used to play in it. It was the real deal with the hand cranked air handler, water stored in metal drums and packaged food etc. This was in SOCAL in the early 60's.

There is one in my old neighborhood in NoCAL that is above ground but is a two room one. It is on private land but all the local dopers used it to party in. It had a bicycle type generator, beds, water etc. The door was huge and heavy.

I guess people were paranoid back then also.

Hey guys,
been busy away from the pc.
I have a few objectives for a bunker/workshop.
#1 Some folks in the Australia outback have built homes undergroud to deal with the intense heat. I was thinking along this concept.

#2 Where i live it gets pretty hot, so I'm designing an underground place to store and work on my fj40 projects.

I'm looking at a 30x40 subterranenan structure with reinforcing steel walls and a 12" concrete arched lid. I'll be able to drive into it as well.

I have thought about the conex idea. I have a few of these alread. unless you protct the steel from the soil and moisture they will rust out.

I put this out there to see if anyone has atttempted the same idea.
All ideas are welcome.

I know someone building a bunker next to his existing home.

You could use it as a workshop, but it will have no external "garage type" access.

The only entrance will be from inside the home.

Spike- That's what I was thinking too when he said bunker- I guess it's because of the missile silos in Arizona that make us bomb nuts...


I was thinking the precast concrete pieces that are used for parking garages... buy a sloped ramp or spiral for the exit... just get a style that has sealed sides instead of open..... then, so long as you owned enough empty property somewhere, you'd be good...

I've been interested in this for a while, and I thought about building something that had a ramp down with a garage door a sliding steel door at the bottom. Concrete is the way to go, I wouldn't put over a ton of dirt on top of a connex box... That'd be pretty small too, especially if you are working on your LC in it...

CELICA XX, did you ever ask how much that bunker cost him? I'd be curious....

how deep is it? and how thick are the walls and roof? did he go with cinder block walls or reinforced concrete?
thats exactly the kind of feedback i was searching for.
