For a price that is....check out this motor on the cummins site.

http://www.everytime.cummins.com/every/applications/ram_mine_performance.jsp

Specially suited to mining needs, based on the venerable 5.9 diesel put into rams, but rated at 175 hp and.....310 lb/ft at 1000 rpms....wow! Apparently its governed to 2900 rpms, which is well below a typical 5.9 diesel, but its well above what you would see in a 4bt.

Now I sit at work with thoughts of lugging up a hill with a 5,000 lb 60 series loaded down with gear...at 1200 rpms...with 35's

The website says it cant be driven on public roads. wtf is that about?

Everyone wants higher performance, and the Cummins 175-hp Turbo Diesel delivers. The Cummins 5.9-liter Turbo Diesel develops peak torque at a very low 1000 rpm, ideally suited to underground driving conditions and speeds. This low-end torque provides better performance for high payloads and trailer towing along with better acceleration, throttle response and driveability. The vehicle is exclusively engineered to limit speed to 25 mph with an optional 40 mph calibration when mine speeds dictate the need.*
Every Cummins 175-hp engine gives you increased performance:
  • Enhanced High Pressure Common Rail fuel system, including large multiple injections for quieter combustion.
  • Exhaust system increased to four-inch diameter from turbo to tailpipe to reduce backpressure.
  • Higher flow design intercooler and engine-mount shroud for improved forced airflow and cooling.
  • Longer oil change intervals so you can go twice as long, reducing the cost of ownership.
* vehicle cannot be operated on public roads

I think the emission are well below normal, since its working in a closed environment like a mine. But the top speed is a blistering 25 mph, with an 'option' of upping that to 40 mph....good luck keeping up with traffic-

Hmmm 5.9 cummins you say. That would be the best swap except the engine weight is about the same as a cruiser its self.

no doubt about cummins quality .... but why if you have the chance to use 12H-T, or 1HD-T engines .. less noisy, nice milleage, and the most miportant things .. is Toyota !

I agree 100%. I was gonna put a 5.9 in my cruiser but after much heavy thought, I'm going the 12H-T root, 100% Toyota!!!!

Dont disregard the 1HD T or 1HZ They are still being produced and are becomng cheaper and easier to find in countries that use them.
The 12HT has been out of production for 16 years and the spare parts supply is dwindling as is the supply of decent used 12HT

emissions

Bio diesel is the answer to your emissions statement. When I first licensed my HJ60 in Washington I had to take an emissions test to get it registered. I filled the ole (read way worn out) 4.0 liter with B100 and drove around for two hours. She passed with flying colors. You have had to have seen how toast
(460,000 klms) that engine was to understand how incredible it was that she passed emissions.
