Hi Guys,

My new (to me) HJ60 is a real smoker. I have just finiished replacing the injectors, and the fuel filter, but still she smokes away. Its a grey smoke at idle, blackish at cruise, and turning jet black underpower. The oil is new and air filter is clean. Standing near this thing makes my eyes water and underway I kinda feel like a jerk. Next I would like to try turning down the fuel. Is that the screw on the back of the injector pump that has a bolt to secure it and a 13mm cap that goes over it with a wire retainer? If so, I cranked it all the way down and all the way out with no difference in performance. The truck has 500K on it and the PO says the engine was "rebuilt" at 350K (not sure what that means, though). I live at appox. 6,000ft.

Any other insight would be appreciated.

Thanks, Winslow

Ok, I found the fuel adjustment screw, now the next question. The FSM calls for a special tool to back off the fuel stop capsule, they call it a lock nut wrench SST 09283-76010. I cannot adjust the screw(which is currently cranked all the way down) and assume this must first be backed off. Is this lock nut wrench a common tool available at Napa and is it nessesary to adjust the screw? It appears frozen. Thanks, Winslow

Whenever the FSM calls for a SST ,you can nearly always find somethng else that can get you by.
Looks like some sort of tube spanner woul do it.

If you are really turning down the fuel, you will feel a dramatic difference in performance. 1/4 turn resulted in the difference between my truck barely moving and quite satisfactory performance. So, if turning that screw is having no effect, something is not right.

You make a 1/4 max 1/2 adjust and it means as Martisn said drastical change in truck performance. The altitude make a huge diference in your truck performance also.

It appears that someone has cranked this thing all the way down. The performance was surprisingly good to me, but the smoke is pretty disgusting, so I'm off to try and find something to loosen the lock nut that holds the screw.

Yup, the altitude fun club! I live at 5000' and wheel much higher...I need to mess with the fuel on mine, I don't think it's turned up enough.

Oh and turbo...;p that helps
