i found a turbo from a eagle talon 2.0L i am in the prosse of hooking it up my qestion is do i need to run a waste gate? its a small turbo / do you think it could over boost

if you have a boost gauge, and you probly should. just give it a go. what engine is it going on? others will know the max boost, if i recall most of the engines can handle 12psi easy

I would always run a wastegate. The AXT on my truck, which many folks say won't boost more than 10 - 12 psi has gotten as high as 15 psi when the waste gate is sticky.

There are some specific wel designed turbo kits that don't run wastegates ( free float devices ) coz the have a lots of measurements to do not come in overboost ( do not trespasing the choke line ) or over spin no matter what rev get the engine ..

But in you case if you are " making your own turbo I trongly recomended wastegate .. you can use a external unit.

thanks good info the turbo is going in a 3B i will hook up boost gauge to test am i crasy to make the waste gate manual?

In "Winterpeg" you likely will not hit maximum boost too often. That occurs where there are hills to climb.
I wouldn't make the wastegate "manual" unless you're going to watch the boost gage all the time.

ok i think i got it figured i will install a blow off valve how does that sound

wich one . ? :D

If you vented to air ..

No need. Also it would sound like s*** on a mountain pass if it was dumping excess pressure so you didn't over boost.

Just do a wastegate. With a pressure sensing line to the output of the turbo. When it gets to a certain point it will open the wastegate diverting exhaust gasses around the turbine allowing the turbo to slow down and produce less pressure.

Either external or internal. If your turbo never had on it, then external is your only choice.

Manual is not an option when driving a car. Manual only works on airplanes as they operate a constant power. But in planes they leave the wastegate open(always bypass) untill the pilot needs it at high altitude. Then he pulls a lever to close it till he has the power he needs.

Will not work on your engine.

You can weld a flange to your manifold to adapt the external wastegate. Then just have an exhaust shop fab up a tie in to the exhaust dump out the turbo.

External will work fine.

I would not put a blow of valve on a diesel engine as you do not have throttle body and it does not make sense. A wastgate is esential if you do not want to over boost. Alos be careful putting a petrol turbo on a disel as the compressor maps are diffrent. The bost curve would be higher in the revband amd much more pressure than a diesel specific turbo which actually spool up much quicker but with lower bost pressure.

i use a merkur turbo on my 3b with no wastegate. the merkur turbo is off a cosworth/ford I4 2.3 litre motor. i installed this in my cruiser a few weeks before coming to new zealand so only got a few weeks with it, and wont get to drive it till august, but i didnt get over 14 lbs boost with it and it seemed like a good match to the 3.4 toy diesel. with a turbo made for a 2.0 litre motor i would think youd see the boost earlier but it might not make as much power at the top end, you may want to do a little more research and find some turbo charts or a/r ratios before you go with the talon turbo. you may want to try and sell it for another with a wastegate, or go for it so the rest of us will know what really would happen.

Why agian cody No wastegate? I remember you asking about them, but you never found one?

You didn't get over 14lbs, did you do any long hills under power? Or was it bombing around calgary?

Glad it felt good :) I can't wait to get my truck on the road......speaking of which I better get back to work on dem doors.....

i never threw one on because i couldnt find one and i was working 98hrs a week the last 3 weeks before i left to nz, didnt have much time. also i had a post turbo exhaust leak that was causing hot egt's so i didnt drive it too hard except for a little after i had started it up but not after it was hot. i need to get the exhaust plate the bolts to the turbo machined but didnt have time before i left.

I thought all of us get the same issue with the adapter plate .. I get mine machine ( done ) and still awaiting the body repairs in the Tencha to try it again ..

This alone is the reason I picked a junkyard turbo. I could get all the pieces. I looked into custom build but I had hassels trying to get it all figured out what I would need. Plus I am 1300 kms from a big city. SO just going to the turbo shop isn't a reality.

Well dude .. the issue in my case ( and honestly never think about it before it happens ) it the 2 piece exhaust manifold in my 2H .. there are space to o-gasket in the union with the down pipe .. as factoru with no back pressure there function pretty fine ..

But with the turbo and the backpressure at this point .. fails as soon I force 14 PSI in my setup ..
