What is the general consensus regarding installing a turbo kit on to an old engine. My 3b is 24 years old and has 120,000kms. My brother in law says that a turbo kit would burn it out. What does anyone think and what are the benefits?
Thanks
James

do a compression test, if the compression is good and the oil pressure is good then bolt on a kit and go enjoy a new engine...
you will wnat to add a pyro, boost and aux oil guage to the mix as well...

A mere 120,000kms!?!? I turbo'd mine at over 300,000kms and have since put on well over 150,000kms since the turbo install. I'm at 490,000kms already on mine and I'll be taking it from Canada to Central America this year with NO concerns on the engine.

Remind your brother in law that these engines routinely get to 1,000,000kms, your's is just starting out.

Turbo it and you will not be sorry so long as the compression and all is fine.

Like Wayne says, pyrometer and boost gauges are essential when you turbo.

cruiser_guy - I know the 3B and 2H are different, but what kind of effeciency loss, if any, did you experience when you added the turbo? I have a 2H with just over 500,000kms and I'm considering the ATX kit. Of course, all of this will come to fruition once I seal up the valve cover leak and do a compression test to get some solid results.

efficency loss...
as in fuel milage? or what?
the only fuel milage you will loose is in complete relation to the skinny pedal, a turbo will not, on it's own, change the fuel milage if anything it "should" increase the fuel milage but alas most that install a turbo enjoy the "drivability" of the truck so much after the turbo is installed the fuel milage goes down...

i am assuming this is what you are asking...

.

ummm, i have "heard of a coupel getting 1,000,000 km on them but i have yet to see one in actual life... and i have seen hundreds of these engiens over the years. "most" need rebuilding at 500,000km-600,000km. the highest km 3B that i have seen (truck was in the hands of the original owner) was 750,000km and it needed rebuilding...

have you seen even 2 that have CONFIRMED 1,000,000 km 3B engines on them?

No efficiency loss but as others will tell you if you've got the power you'll use it and I agree so the only efficiency loss is because of the heavy right foot!

I have yet to see them in real life! Perhaps mine will make it there! I'm 1/2 way already and still within factory specs. I suspect that most folks tend to become careless with maintenance once the vehicle gets up there in age thus quickening the death of the vehicle.

Hey dude .. I do a overhaul in my 2H maybe 7 years ago like a 60,000 km .. today turbo intercooler recently done .. and I'm really really happy .. search for my thread a lots more info ..
