That’s gonna be the route I go as well, I already have 8 watt HAM handhelds for emergencies but they also operate on GMRS.Very cool! I received my FCC Registration Number, now I just need to decide which units to buy.

Go here first and get a FREE FRN Number:
FCC Registration - Login
apps.fcc.gov
Then go here and follow these instructions:
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Log in to ULS Online Filing with your FCC Registration Number (FRN) and password.
2.On the left-side of the screen, click Apply for a New License.
3.From the drop down box, select the Radio Service for the new license.
4.Click Continue to navigate through the application.
5.Sign your application and click Submit Application.
The FCC license is good for 10 years.
