Truck-mounted awnings

Another detail not advertised is that it came with two mounting brackets, basically big, stainless steel L-brackets. The problem is they are only 1" wide so making them work with the round Yakima load bars won't work without some additional adapter plate and U-bolt. It's ok because I got some other, wider L-brackets made that I will use to mount it with U-bolts to the Yak bars.

It doesn't come with brackets?

Yup, came with brackets.

OK, I see. The brackets that come with the awning won't fit the Yak bars. Good to know since I also have Yakima load bars.

The brackets that come with the unit are approximately 3" X 8" X 3/16" thick L-brackets and about 1" wide. Here are a couple images I found online. You need a flat surface to bolt them to, not a round one like the Yakima load bar.

Marc is the new modification guy lately! look at you doing mods to your truck.
those led's are going to be great while camping. good job.

Even with those skinny brackets, I could make them work with u-bolts. But I still like the option you have better.

The key to these mods is they are "wife-approved". They don't change the way the truck looks, feels or handles; unlike what sliders, bumpers and a lift would do.

Claming U-Bolt

You could use a couple of these per bracket. Drill a hole in the center of the sheet metal part of the clamp, have a hex bolt stick up and the sides of the clamp portion would keep it from spinning when you tighten it up.

That awning changes the look more than sliders....I think you just got the go ahead for them.

There are two small rope loops that you can tie guy-lines to. They included two beefy tent-stakes and two ropes with some plastic tensioners (for people who can't tie a taut-line hitch). Those will secure the outer uprights to the ground if its windy.

You're preaching to the choir Graham. But I can remove the awning in about 10 minutes. Not so with sliders. And the awning cost about 1/3 of what sliders would cost.

You could always get step sliders! Slee makes them!

Marc,
Glad you got it all together in time for your journey, lookin' good!
Looks like for the IronMan the brackets work out better as you have them, for my ARB they are a better fit on top of the yak bar. In my case I also biased the yak bars over to one side to put the awning a little closer to the truck which I'm hoping will keep out more wind and rain.
Hope my brackets made life a little easier.

One thing I did right away with mine was to cut off the zipper pulls and replace them with some home made para-cord pulls that don't jingle, the jingle was driving me nuts with the windows down, that said it looks like IronMan is using a more compact pull so may not be a issue for you.

Enjoy it!,

I zip-tied the two pulls together to try to get them to stop making noise and to reduce the likelihood of vandals and dirt-bags unzipping the cover. And I put the awning on the wife's side of the truck so I don't have to listen to rattling or buffeting noises.

I also pushed my crossbars as far over as I could and still get the little door on the towers open for securing the crossbars and towers. I would have liked to get it even further over but then I wouldn't be able to open the tower access door.

mods are mods. baby steps dude. she'll come up slowly, just baby her along and you'll have the lift soon enough. monster truck isn't everything. just get her camping in comfort and she'll want more. ask Ali, he's the master at that.:D

Just for the record, I haven't had any vandals messing with my awning but I also don't live in town.
