2010 LX - randomly the 'auto' wiper position on the stalk (one down from off) has stopped working. Other intermittent positions work fine, and when placed in the 'auto' position it does a single 'check' wipe, but that is it, nothing else.

From looking at the fuse diagrams, all the other functions on that fuse are working fine.

No codes. No lights.

What can/should I check?

Inoperable sensor at rearview mirror location?
What would I be looking for? No codes being thrown.

Also, not sure what the intended functionality is, but for the first intermittent position, I've noticed it doesn't appear to be a consistent wiper speed, not sure if it also has some auto adjustments, or if it's speed dependent, but noticed the wipers slow down when stopped and speed up when moving...

As it was explained to me, by a windshield guy, there is a portion of the window that serves as an area to meter how much rain/water is hitting the windshield and when optically there is enough accumulation it activates the wipers. This also explains the speed differential as more drops would hit at speed than sitting still? Sorry for the oblique explanation.

Push on the black box behind the rearview mirror and see if that makes the wipers move. If thats the case you probably just need to new sensor "tape"

Winner winner chicken dinner....that did the trick after I removed the black cover...is there specific tape to get? Just looked for sensor tape on Amazon and I don't think I'm getting the right results...

I ordered new rain sensor tape, part # 89944-50021, but the rain sensor wont stay on the windshield. It looks as though there is some other double sided black tape that was holding my sensor on, but I don't see it on the parts schematic.

For those that replaced the rain sensor tape, did it stay attached to the windshield with just the tape or did it require another adhesive?

The sensor itself should clip onto a metal bracket bonded to the back side of the windshield. The word “tape” is a misnomer.. all it is meant to do is fill the gap between the sensor and the glass with an invisible but solid layer so the module can detect the drops of water via ultrasound or whatever technology it uses. But it isn’t particularly sticky, and definitely not intended to hold the sensor to the panel.

Thanks! That what I assumed. My metal bracket is no longer attached to the windshield, and it doesn't look like the adhesive or bracket are available as separate parts from the sensor. I'll try the auto parts stores for a solution to get the bracket bonded again. Thanks!

I happen to have a new OEM panel sitting in my living room while I try to find a worthy installer, so I snapped a couple pics of the bracket. It seems to be attached on all sides with a soft black adhesive of some kind, probably a urethane. Also I can say from experience with my current pilkington panel that how much and how parallel the bracket stands off from the glass is important, as my current one will not get the gel tape totally flush across the whole span. So I’d try to find some way to keep it close and parallel.

Note that it is a much larger gap than the mirror mount bond, plus a much larger piece of metal so expansion/contraction would be a bigger problem. This and the reduced forces compared to a mirror on such a small surface area are likely why they used a flexible adhesive.
