Transport Canada's Review of 15yr+ Imports

I would suggest if many importers get stuck with door closing with units in transit, or paid for but not shipped.... that you all form a legal case. Together. Sue for lost revenues, etc.

If they decide to close the door, then there needs to be an implementation period. IMOP, or they risk fighting their decisions in court.

Transport Canada is used to going to court. Aviation industry often fights many issues. Companies who can afford good legal definitely help shape legislation.

If they are using safety as an issue why would they exempt vehicles to 25 years then? Would it not make more sense to ban all imported vehicles then. I guess at least I can import one of those old cars from Cuba. I am sure they will be quite roadworthy. What about Russia? We haven't even thought of how many neat cars they might have.

you know what I heard last time I was down at the docks this June, that Jimmy Patison was lobbying to get RHD drives banned, as he is experiencing a loss of sales, not only due to the fact that American vehicles are inefficient and inferior. Also I heard that he has closed one to two of his dealerships as a result of us importing so many vehicles.

I'll call a big BS on that, there is no way 2000 JDM's coming into canada (not all to BC) can affect a huge industry. Closing dealerships because of it - I highly doubt it. If it were that much of a threat he would just start bringing in imports.

you do have a point, but combined with chev's inferior product and loss of market share to new Japanese auto's, plus all the vehicles that importers bring in, it hit him in the wallet for sure.

As for him importing them himself, my brother asked me the same question when i started importing them back about 3 years ago. I don't know the answer to that, but maybe he has the same misconceptions about these products that most consumers do

I am probably the biggest conspiracy theorist I know, I would like to think that even part of the reason is a guy like pattison, but the truth is I have met with Transport Canada officials and they along with the CCMTA (who are basically the same) have orcestrated this whole thing - in my opinion.

Imports have probably hurt some people, some used car dealers who lost money jumped on the band wagon and enjoyed the ride, a guy like pattison can voice his opinion - but I doubt he has influence on Transport Canada.

Regards,

Jimmy Pattison owns dealerships in almost every brand. So I doubt he is hurting there. Doesn't he own the whole automall in Vancouver.

Nobody has influence on TC. Big airlines with deep pockets still cannot change regulations that are silly.

The only politician with clout would be the minister of transport. MP's can try to sway the minister for sure. But the legislature(inside tc) starts on a lower level.

ICBC/then private individuals will lobby the provincial transport ministers, who then will lobby the federal for action. Really complex system....

when it changes to 25 yrs (or if it does) it will be hard to reverse the ruling. It would take extended court proceeding to make any headway.
