Correct. That's what I'm worried about. Solenoid #3 (1 and 2 are the same) is also a one bolt bracket. They all are. 3 and 4 share the same bolt but only one, not two bolts

I just got these solenoids for my 90 Sahara with a 442f that wants to hang onto gears waaaay too long. I’m going to have a crack at fitting them myself tomorrow. Drain oil, drop pan, undo a few bolts to swap out each solenoid, pan back on and new oil. Am I missing anything or any tricks to this? Cheers for your input. Has saved me a heap of coin cause these solenoids are crazy hexy over here in OZ.

Wouldn't a 90 have a full hydraulic A442 with no solenoids?

Oh s***, don’t tell me I stuffed up research! I def have the A442F, the cars plate says so. Did Toyota make 2 versions and call it the same name??

I don't see many trucks with auto transmissions in the shop (i.e. 1 in about the past 3 years I think) however to my knowledge, there were 3 types of A442 fitted to cruisers:

1) 01/1990 to 07/1992 - full hydraulic transmission
2) 08/92 to end of 80 series - 4 solenoid transmission, still has physical 'throttle cable' to control internal line pressure.
3) 100 series to MY03, not 100% on the cutoff date - 5 solenoid A442 came behind 2UZ-FE and 1HD-FTE. No cable, 5th solenoid controls line pressure.

If anyone has info to confirm or contradict, I'd be glad to hear it.

So all 3 called A442F?? That’s just seems crazy! Change a letter or something. Anyways, is there anyway to physically check what I have? Don’t know if this changes anything but it’s a full jap import, not Aussie delivered.

All A442, yes.

I don't think a JDM truck would be any different.

Damm! Ok, so any idea why a full hydraulic would hang onto gears too long? Oh and thanks heaps for your input mate 👍🏽
If the fluid is clean and at the correct level, try adjusting the transmission throttle cable (kickdown cable.) Too tight would usually lead to delayed, firm shifts. You should be able to find the FSM in the resources section of the forum which will give you the procedure but from memory you want about 2mm between the bead and the orange boot.

The hydraulic one is PRND32L, the electronic PRND2L shifter

EDITED, actually not sure about cooling lines. I'm pretty sure my old electronic tranny had cooling lines on the left. The hydraulical one I have now is on the right. Hell, gotta find out when I see my old one in the barn. The shifter identification is 100% though.

If that helps any.

Fluid has been recently changed, still like new and level has been checked. I will look into kick down cable. Appreciate your help.

Yeah I’m PRND32L f@ck it lol. Seems I’ve got a full set of Soleniods for sale… thanks mate.

I can send you a 93 electronic a442f, if you wanna be in a different world of trouble 🙃

Jokes aside. Dunno your symptoms but as little as I know about this tranny (installed it 5 days ago), the most common by a laaaarge margin is supposed to be a weak kickdown cable (or just poorly adjusted), and if that does not help, it's either some crap in the oil, or a valve body rebuild, or a full rebuild. Mine is having a bit of a flare between 2nd and 3rd but I have yet to connect the kickdown cable at all.

But hey, you're in OZ. Talk to Rodney in wholesale automatics in Melbourne. They'll definitely help you.

Good call on wholesale automatics, but start with the cable adjustment, from experience it can make a big difference.

So I checked my kick down cable and may have found the answer. Its sticking badly! Any throttle opening, the cable doesn’t retract. Am trying now to find the other end to try and lubricate or whatever to free it up. I’m guessing you guys would say this maybe my issue? Oh issue is, not shifting or shifting way too late.
