Hello,

Today after work I got in my BJ73 Land Cruiser, started it but no matter how hard I pushed the clutch pedal in, the gearbox would not shift gears under normal gear-shifting force. When you applied a lot of force on the gearbox with the clutch pedal pushed in all the way, it would be as if the clutch pedal wasn't pushed in at all - lots of grinding of gears but eventually it would switch (albeit the car would be much harder to control). When I turned off the car, the gears would switch fine. It also drove fine earlier that morning.

I left the car at my friend's place overnight but I'm going to have to pick it up tomorrow.

Several questions
What could this be? How do I fix it?

Thanks very much!

Looks as if there is a problem with the clutch.
Check the fluids in the reservoir. If low, add fluid and check for leaks.
If fluid is sufficient, let somebody move the pedal and check for movement of the clutchhandle underneath.
If all this is okay, a more thourough inspection of the clutch may be needed.

so the obvious Q's..
no smell of clutch burning previously? no burn outs.. no getting bogged and continuous hard work placed on the clutch?.. you would know if you burnt it out!
if not, then your pressure plate etc should be fine.. which is good news
this leads you to the hydraulics of the clutch system..
check as per Ron suggests

is the clutch pedal really loose/soft? should feel like nothing if fluid is gone
if it's stil stiff to depress the clutch then im not sure.

if fluid is gone/missing.. you have a leak,
- check the master cylinder in engine bay for leaks and also where your clutch pedal link attaches on the inside of your cab on the firewall (there is a boot there that could be cracked which is part of the MC)
- alternatively check the slave cylinder.. im not sure where this is on the 73, but in my 40.. it's on the chasis rail on the LHS.. easy to follow the plumbing to locate.. this may also be faulty and leaking
- or you may have a cracked pipe somewhere in the line..

sounds to me like its a fluid related issue

if you need to take your truck home.. and you cant suss it out.. just try and time your shift to match really low revs and smoothly shift (you dont need the clutch) its a bit hit and miss, but it will get you home.. just a total PITA if yoU have to go thro a few sets of traffic lights..lol
