Shops around town wanted between 1,200 and 1,500, which is about the standard price for an overdrive. Almost all of my hard parts were in great shape so mine should have been on the low end unless someone wanted to make more money and lie......you just never know and never will.

TCI rebuilt kit from Jegs.com $260

ASTG tech manual for 700r4 Jegs.com $25

Technical video series 700r4 video from Ebay $35

Rebuilt pump / B&M trans $75

Reman torque converter / B&M trans $100

New transmission case from 4x4 / some guy in Ellicot -- 12 pack of beer.

Case (12 quarts) ATF / Sam's $17

Piece of 3/4 plywood to use as shop table $20

Getting hard teflon seals installed on input shaft, new wiring harness, larger end play bushing, new center support bushing, installed new bushing in rear of trans case / B&M trans $60

So with all the misc. shipping and dumb stuff, just over $600. But for me, the knowledge I gained is worth more than the money I saved. I used to worry about my parking sprag when I winched, now I know how heavey duty it is and don't have to worry. I also know a lot more about what goes on in there and how to trouble shoot it, used to think there was black magic and voodoo inside automatics.........there isn't........:D

you should see if they can make that into one of those credit card commercials.its priceless.

Lol, yup.

All that stuff to rebuild my automatic transmission: 600 bucks

Not having to push in the clutch on a steep hillside: priceless

:D

, used to think there was black magic and voodoo inside automatics.........there isn't........:D

I disagree, I think you have transcended to transmission Shaman

Finally decided the black truck had been grounded for long enough. It was looking sad with everything starting to rust, and the tires sinking into the ground. Pulled it into the garage and started to pull out that problem child transmission in it. Chuck's buddy Mike stopped in to see what I was doing under there and got sucked into helping remove it, which was nice, because it moved along much faster.

We got it up on the table and turned the shaft by hand, things sounded bad in there... real bad. Curiosity got the better of us so we ripped out the drum and forward input drum. There were a lot of extra pieces :D

I feel pretty redeemed. A lot of people were giving me some trash about the fact that I built my own trans and now it don't work. Turns out a large chunk around the hub bolt of the pump shaft must have been cracked and is MIA. This would have fed into the input drum and probably caused all that havok you see in the pictures. That's what I get for buying a reman pump. The clutch packs and lower half of the trans look great, unfortunately, you don't go anywhere without an input drum. That's all supposed to be connected in there. All the pieces are polished to nice rounded edges, hard to believe this tranny got me home from Arkansas...

Yikes

If it looked like that in Arkansas it would not have gotten you home.

So now what?

Skipped out on work today and took a stroll through U pull and pay looking for suburbans. I thought finding vehicles in the '87 to '92 range would be harder, there are a lot of chevys in that lot. I must have pulled 35 trans dipsticks checking them all out. Hard to tell with the fluid out of them, but there is usually enough residual fluid to tell a story. There were a few that smelled just as bad as mine.

Settled on a '90 pickup that had nice clean red fluid, and to top it off, someone had already removed the transfer case and driveshafts. :) Torque converter looks new, and there is a sticker on the bellhousing about how to hook up the TV cable that proves it's not the original truck's trans. Here's hoping that it doesn't need anything and might be good. I have to pull it down pretty far to put my Advanced Adapters output shaft in it, so I'll find any damage that might be in there...

Wish me luck.
