Well, it turns out our ‘08 LX570 which we had hoped would be our forever car will be requiring a new transmission per Lexus dealer. New replacement transmission is quoted at $11K.

Current issue: PCS, VSC, check engine light and 4LO light are on. Intermittent delay shifting into 4th gear especially in the morning but once it warms up it shifts fine. Noticeable but not too harsh shift from 1st to 2nd.

We previously had issues with transmission before with another mechanic but remedied with transmission flush and trans-x treatment. No issues until now.

Current codes are P2714 pressure solenoid and P0761 shift solenoid.

We are the 3rd owner. Vehicle has only 92K miles. I have $9.3K left to payoff the car note.

So We have 3 options:

1. Sell the vehicle at a major loss and disclose the transmission issues for buyer to fix
2. Go to an independent mechanic and rebuild the transmission for ~ $3.5K and sell vehicle at a lesser loss value.
3. Fix transmission and continue to keep vehicle.

So Mudders what do you think and how would you proceed?

Thanks!

I would start by getting a second (and maybe third) opinion on the state of/problems with the transmission.

Of course the dealer wants to sell you an $11k part and the associated labour; that's what they make their money on.

If the issue is confirmed, option #2 sounds like the most reasonable approach. Get the transmission rebuilt/fixed at the lowest cost to you, and get rid of the vehicle if your trust in it has been shaken.

It's also worth looking around for used transmissions in junkyards and such. It may be cheaper to swap in a used transmission than to rebuild your current one.

Wolf, I’m located in Guam so sourcing a transmission is difficult and would require shipping here.

Your advice sounds reasonable and the most pragmatic.

thanks!

I'd try to find a used unit if possible. $11k is steep! I'd still try to get something shipped, it will probably save you a lot of $$$.

See if any indy offers a warranty. That way you could drive it for a while and see if the rebuild seems to be done right before deciding to sell at a loss...

Anyone know where I can source a used tranny from a reliable dealer?

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Being in Guam adds some complexity and $ to resolving the issue.
I would consider options 2 or 3. Start with a Re-build and if done correctly and with the right parts it can result in a better then Stock setup. If the rebuild doesn’t feel or seem right after driving it, trade it in on a another vehicle or if selling private party disclose the past tranny issues to the buyer.

Option 2 all day long.

I can possibly swing purchasing from car-part.com.

I know transmissions are interchangeable b/w Toyotas. Which year group should I look for when doing a search?

I believe my 6 speed was offered up to 2015 LX and Landcruisers?

I know at least one person swapped in a tundra motor, I assume the pre-16 transmissions in the Tundra are also the same. A low mile used transmission would be my choice if I could find one. I have bad experience with rebuilt transmissions and would not consider one without a very good warranty.

Edit: I see the cost of a new transmission before shipping for a Tundra or LX is $2700-$3,000. I'm not sure what shipping is to Guam, but I may try the additional option of getting a new transmission and having an indy install it.

The Tundra has a different transmission, not even the same number of gears, as I recall.

I'd get a second and third opinion. If you like the vehicle otherwise, fix or replace the faulty part and keep driving it. Fixing and selling seems like a strange thing to do

To add to what @40Man mentioned about rebuilt transmissions, I have also had issues with rebuilds in the past. Granted it was a Chevy 700r4 and not a Toyota I’d still recommend a low like mileage used option over the rebuild. Only exception would be if you have a connection to a specialist you trust who will stand by his work.

Had a Tundra, it has six speeds and the center diff mates to it. Don't know if there are ecu issues. Looks like the lexus tranny is not much more if op can source new in Guam.

I could have sworn that my 2010 Tundra and my 2013 Land Crusier had vey different transmissions, despite the fact that they're both the 5.7. I could absolutely be wrong. You seem to know the details about these platforms, so I suspect you are right.

They have different transfer cases, but the center diff will bolt to it as @bjowett did with his. He knows more about the trannys than most...

Change the fluid yourself and see how the transmission behaves. This is not a transmission failure. This is a previous mechanics incompetence that is potentially leading to premature mechanical failure.

Here’s an update: had an indie transmission mechanic take a test drive and he confirms transmission failure.

There’s an inherent risk in buying a used tranny stateside and having it shipped to Guam and them find out it is inop so I’m going to go with a rebuild. His Workmanship will have 1 yr warranty.

I’m considering an AB60 rebuild kit from Oregon Performance Transmission. Any PNW folks heard of them?
