Did some searching, but couldn't find the answer I was looking for. Just picked up a 4-Speed for a possible 4-on-the-tree conversion from Mark A. It was said to be from a '78. Is there any numbers/I.D. info on the case that would verify the year? It seems that there was 9/73-4/76, and 4/76-7/80 4 Speeds. The trans I picked up doesn't have the PTO provision:mad:. I am assuming that would be the 4/76-7/80 version? Thanks for any info. Brendon

Why don't you ask Mark? He is pretty smart about this stuff.

None of the 4 speeds had a PTO provision. The PTO drive bolted to the transfer case. And as far as I know, in the USA, only the 3 speed transfer cases could do this.

The 4 speeds are the same through 81 when the output went from 16 splines to 19.

What transfer case do you have? That will determine what transmission will work for you.

the early 4 speeds had a pto outlet but was never used and you can put a pto winch on a 4 speed cruiser .if you use the 3 speed t case then you will need marks kit to make it fit.

The only thing you need to make a PTO work that is different than the three speed is the sixteen spline PTO gear.

The 8/80 four speed was differnt so the 8o model not 81 is the last year you can without other mods.

Thanks for the info. I just haven't had a chance to call Mark, but thought I would try to gain some info before doing so. I plan to keep the 3-Speed T-case with Mark's kit. I wasn't thinking that the PTO ran off of the T-case, I just noticed that the transmission case casting didn't have the side access cover.:cheers:Brendon

Hey Brendon! If the trans is a 1978, it will have a sensor on the top cover that is engaged in 4th gear only. That is a 1978 specific part.

In general, you can tell the difference between the 74-76ish and 77 newer trans by the number of bolts on the 1" rear extension cover. The earlier ones had two bolts below the t-case spread, the later ones had three.

Best

Mark A.

The top cover can be a little hard to find and a necessity for someone with a 78 and overbearing smog police. Just sayin'.

Thanks for the info. I'll post up a photo for verification. No smog here yet, if the cover/sensor is important to someone who needs it, I'd be willing to swap covers...:steer: Brendon
