Will a 84 transmission and transfer case out of a FJ60 fit in a 78 FJ40. What are the differences? The 84 is split xfer case? What about the transmission. Would the 78 Xfer case fit the 84 tranny if that was the only difference. I've looked on the forums and can't seem to find the answer.

the transfer cases will not swap from trans to trans.
the 84 will go into the 78, you will need to change the top plate of the trans and you will end up with no park brake.
Not certain but I think the flanges are the same bolt pattern and size.

The difference between trans top plates is where the shift tower and cane come up. The 60 series top plate comes up further back than the 40 series top plate. I may be all wet on this (haven't done this), but the 60 series top plate just might work (maybe), but it definitely would be several inches back from the 40 series location. Doing this would also possibly interfere with any console that might be between the seats. Also, the different floor plate (than the earlier cruisers) might cause problems. The best thing to do would be to do some careful measuring.

Then again, since you have both the 40 series and 60 series trans, the top plates might interchange. I haven't done this either, so it would be another thing to check out.
