The top pic from Photoman (thanks) in the above post is what my trany cable looks like. The one in the manual is not the one I have.

The cable in 'kurt drawing' is in my manual. My cable looks like the FJ62. And Toyota USA says to adjust with 1mm of play.
I am confused.

I have the old style as well...

Must be the better style. When toyota changed the tranny cable, it all went downhill. The tranny, the airbags, the door lights. Yeecchh!!!

I have the same set up on my 94 with A442. The stopper cannot retract into the boot, as the boot fits snugly around the wire cable. I think there should be 1mm between the boot and stopper. Is this what you finally figured out?
