I unfortunately let my transfer rear output seal leak for awhile leading to my 1988 hj75's rear driveshaft. About to start , so removed driveshaft, but the extension housing has a bit of play in it. Does the seal alone actually stop any play? Or do I need to get into the actual transfer to find play in a bearing? Haven't opened a transfer case yet.

The seal doesn't stop any play. But if you've loosened the large nut holding the flange/yoke on then you dont have any preload on your bearing anymore and it'll feel sloppy.
