I've had a search, and copied this pic from that search. In this pic where the red arrow is going too, where the 12mm bolt holds the key that holds the shaft. I've had a leak from my case from there forever. Is there a lip seal in or around there? I can't seem to make it make it out on my manuals? What's involved in replacing it? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Joel

That is the idler shaft, and there's an O-ring around it at that end. It's possible you could pull the shaft out just far enough to replace the O-ring, but I would be afraid that the other end would fall out of it's socket at the forward end. Then you might be stuck splitting the case to put it back in right.

There is a O ring on that shaft.
It is easy to replace it.
Just unscrew the bolt, Remove the Key, pull back the shaft a little bit (stop when you could see the ring) and replace that ring.
But becareful, not to pull back the shaft too much.
Because there is a other O ring on that shaft betwen transfert case and your manuals and oil will leaking betwen them.
I've done it on my Hj61 and I pull back this shaft too much, I must drain oil, and dissasamble T case...
Excuse me for my poor English, I hope you understand This thread

I've never tried this, but you need to really be careful not to pull the idler shaft out too much. There are thrust washers at the other end and if you loose one of them, you will be taking the whole thing apart.

You're right, That's why I had to dissasamble T case.
One of those Washers Fall inside, when i'have done It.
If you stop When you see the ring, no problem...

joel its easy mate,i did mine a few months back, fixed the leak but then i found out most the oil is coming from in between transfer and box, bugger.
get some multigrips on the end of the shaft and wriggle it back and forth while gently pulling it outward, gently is the word.
the oring is just inside the case so it doesnt need to come out far,as soon as oring is showing stop.
dont muck around trying to pry the old oring off, grab a stanley knife and cut it and let it drop.
toyota have got the seals @ $3.00 if i remember, prob have to order it in.
cheers goldchaser

Keep us posted - I need to do the same thing and I'm interested in progress.

Righto did this today. Pulled the idler out further then I wanted to, but had no dramas. Needed a bit of a love tap to go back in? But it's sweet now. No leaks, no worries. Old brittle sucker came off easy, greased the new one and tapped her back in.
