These two gears on the left of the (above 2-'75) case don't mesh the way they do in my rusty case (below 4-'75). You can see how they don't spin on the same plane, perpendicular to their respective shafts. What is going on?

Sorry for the cheap, and somewhat rhetorical, question directed to a quality audience, but, how much gear rust pitting is too much?
 
1. Since the vehicle spends 99% of its time in high range, it is much more critical that the high speed gears be perfectly aligned. That is why the pre-75 idler gear thrust washer shims are on the backside, not the front.

2. Regarding the rust, keep in mind that only a few thousands of an inch of the facing on the gear teeth is heat treated. While the metal below is strong, it is not strong enough for the job it needs to do. Only the heat treating makes it so.
