The transfercase shifter is making sort of a whining/grinding noise on my 1977 fj40 while in 2H... If I place my hand on the shifter and press it forward i can feel a heavy vibration and if i push harder I can make the noise stop... Any idea's of what this might be?

loose linkages, your probably missing your rubber boot for it. mine got so bad i tied it to the heater hose

I found quite a bit of wear to the shift fork in two out of the three transfer cases I've done. One of them is a '77 4 speed coincidentally. The fork wear kept the shifter from moving the sliding 'dog clutch' into the high range side on mine but it could go the other way too and make low range not fully engage.
It's an easy fix - SOR has the part both new and used, New was about $60. IIRC, and the thing is accessable by removing the shifter housing from the side of the front driveshaft output housing.
